The first season of the highly anticipated Fear the Walking Dead spin-off of the hugely popular Walking Dead has now been completed, with the season finale airing last Sunday night.
There were, I believe, either five or six episodes, and most of the people that I know who watched them were disappointed - particularly after the first couple of episodes. They felt that it was very slow, and the characters were more difficult to care about then in The Walking Dead.
On some level, I can see that, and even agree with it, although the first couple of episodes, when things still felt more or less normal (before the zombies essentially ended life as we know it) also needed to consist of character building, so it is understandable that it might have felt a little bit slow. By the final two episodes or so, the show began to feel much more like the original series.
Personally, I am enjoying it, although would also have to admit that I am not into it as much as the original series (at least not yet). It felt like there was a lot more drama, a lot more to grab you instantly, while this one feels a bit sluggish still. Those who escaped Los Angeles were taken in by the Army, and they have not yet done much traveling, so they are not constantly fighting off zombies and/or rival groups and gangs. Once it reaches that point (assuming it reaches that point), then it will likely start to feel more like TWD, and might gain in popularity. That said, I am not sure that it will, because this series does not have characters of the magnitude of Rick, Daryl, Carol, Michonne, and Glenn. At least not yet.
All of that said, it is still pretty decent, and I am looking forward to the second season, although admittedly not with the same level of anticipation of other television series - including The Walking Dead itself.
