Last year, I mentioned how I had gotten an old Giants helmet, and wanted to get some autographs from former members of the New York Giants, specifically members of the Super Bowl championship teams.
There were some successes last year, too, which I posted about, although I got the helmet too late for some of the Giants legends during the training camp, which included Sean Landeta and Bart Oates (each a member of both the XXI and XXV Super Bowl championship teams), Brad Benson (XXI), and Stephen Baker "The Touchdown Maker" (XXV). Plus, I got a mini helmet signed by two high profile members of the XLII championship team, Dave Tyree (the guy who brought down the one-handed helmet catch), and Plaxico Burress, who caught the winning touchdown catch that clinched the surprise victory over the previously undefeated New England Patriots.
However, going to Giants training camp this season allowed me to get many more autographs, which was very cool. Among the autographs were the following:
Barry Cofield XLII, Darcy Johnson XLII, Deon Grant XLVI, Jay Alford XLII, Keith Hamilton (member of XXXV team that lost), Pete Mitchell (member of XXXV team that lost), Henry Hynoski (XLVI), Kevin Boothe (XLII and XLVI),
Chris Snee (XLII and XLVI), I was not able to get an autograph for, because I was late, and George Martin was the other guy, when it was originally supposed to be someone else, but was switched to Charlie Way, and then, without much prior notice (at least I did not know about it on the day of) wound up being George Martin. I remember Martin well, especially those two big games he had against the Denver Broncos in 1986. In the first game, he returned an interception of John Elway for a touchdown, which was key to the Giants winning that contest. In the Super Bowl, he managed to catch Elway in his own end zone for a safety, which essentially helped to give the Giants momentum. New York went on to win their first ever Super Bowl, and Martin played a big part in all of that.
It is fun and, best of all, it is free! Free and entirely open to the public. For football fans, or at least Giants fans, that is quite amazing! After all, catching them during the regular season tends to be cost prohibitive. So, being able to see them, up close and personal, during training camp is pretty amazing. hell, we even get free little souvenirs, such as bottle warmers or sun glasses or bandannas for our efforts!
Can't beat that!

Looks like you had fun. Sébastien clearly seems to be enjoying himself, too. Could it be that at least some of his father's passion for the game is beginning to rub off on him?
ReplyDeleteNo, he's not a fan.
