Half of U.S. Senate Urges Washington NFL Team to Change Name

Wow!

This issue, which existed dating back to at least the early nineties, when the Washington football team was enjoying far more success on a year-to-year basis, and even enjoying Super Bowl success. It was still often relegated to back story status back then, with a human interest story of maybe five or so minutes devoted to the controversy, and with advocates of a name change almost systematically being dismissed as some kind of extremists.

But momentum has grown for advocates of a name change, to the point that now, half of the US Senators have urged the Washington NFL team to change their names, especially since another local team, the Washington Wizards, also changed their name in recent memory, as the previous franchise name, the "Bullets", was seen as reminding too many of street violence in a city not known for low crimes rates.

So, the momentum on this issue grows and grows, and it is beginning to feel a bit to me like this issue will continue to grow more still, until that time when the franchise does in fact change their name.

But, let's see what happens with that.

Here is a link to the article about the US Senators urging the Washington NFL team to change their names (and yes, this took me a while to finally publish in my blog entry, admittedly):

Half of U.S. Senate tells NFL: Change Redskins' name by Alan Fram of the Associated Press, May 22, 2014:
