Well, they did it!
Yes, the Islanders entered last night's game up three games to two, hosting the Bruins with a chance at eliminating them. And they took advantage of it in a big way. Did they ever!
The game was still tight and competitive after the first period, tied 1-1.
In the second period, however, the Islanders took over. The middle frame erupted and New York scored three unanswered goals, taking solid command of the game. They entered the final period with a comfortable 4-1 lead, which seemed nearly insurmountable.
It indeed proved to be that. The Islanders eventually won the game, 6-2, and thus, clinched the series win along with it. The win has some historical significance, as the Islanders now are 8-0 in franchise history when hosting a potential series clinching Game 6 situation.
Next, the Islanders will play the defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning in the Stanley Cup semifinals. The Lightning eliminated the Islanders last year. How sweet would it be if the Islanders can return the favor this postseason?
