This post made me laugh out loud, and even tear up a little.
Things escalated very quickly.
Right now, this is the holiday season. And if you are like me, it no longer feels quite as magic as it once did during childhood. Once you grow older, you begin to associate the holidays with some unpleasant things, like stress. Traffic jams, particularly around large shopping malls (and I have to pass a major mall each time I drive to work). Holiday shopping, and trying to find gifts, especially if you are like me and often forget until the last minute. The over-commercialization of the holiday, which quickly made it feel a whole lot less magical after my first retail job made us decorate for Christmas in late August, even before Labor Day (yes, that is literally what they had us do when I worked at Steinbach's department store in Wayne, New Jersey, back in the late summer of 1994). It was hot and humid outside, and we were decorating for Christmas, sometimes with snowy, wintery scenes on display.
Another thing, these days, are the "Keep Christ in Christmas" bumper stickers and yard displays. There is one which I pass on a regular basis during my normal daily walks in the neighborhood. Those people who subscribe to the frankly ridiculous notion that there is some kind of "war on Christmas" clearly have no idea what real war actually is, just as those Christians who claim that there is a war against Christianity and that they are facing persecution clearly have no idea what actual war and real persecution is. They tend to exaggerate their alleged suffering to such a degree that it becomes difficult, frankly, to take them seriously. In fact, often times it sure feels a whole lot more like what they are complaining about is not being able to have their own religious beliefs dominate the country or the world without any kind of opposition. It often seems like their real objections are about when people resist having those religious beliefs crammed down their throats.
Frankly, it feels like these people too often take themselves, and their professed beliefs, a bit too seriously. Especially when those beliefs which they actually profess to hold dear too often do not seem to match or even remotely resemble what Jesus actually said or taught. So while I have some reservations about mocking people or their beliefs, it feels like these people, who actually feel emboldened to advertise their crusade against "the war on Christmas" are almost literally begging to be knocked down a peg or two with some humor.
So it is in that spirit that I thought that this particular post which I saw on Facebook would be worth it's own blog entry here.
Enjoy.
