So, the Cleveland Browns just released their new uniform designs for the 2015 season.
They released supposedly new designs for helmets earlier this year, but were mocked when the hoopla ended with helmets that looked marginally different than the ones that they had worn for so long before.
Now, the Browns had to fall back on their new uniforms, and indeed, these changes were a bit more dramatic.
Personally, what I like about these new uniforms is that there is some measure of continuity there. Cleveland is the only team in the NFL to incorporate brown into their uniform, and they also happen to be one of the richest teams historically speaking in the NFL (although they have not made the right kind of history in recent years, and even decades now).
As I have said before, the uniforms were not the problem. It was the on the field and off the field issues that kept plaguing this team that prevented them from taking that next step. They have a decent team, a talented team. A tough defense, despite perennial issues on offense. They could, and probably should, have been a lot better last season than they were. For a while, it looked like they were capable of making a run into the playoffs, and possibly even challenge for a division championship.
Instead, they lost their last five games following a strong 7-4 start, to easily finish in the basement of a tough division once again.
So, no, the uniforms were not a problem. In fact, I rather liked their uniforms, and particularly their brown jerseys.
The new uniforms are not radically different and, in fact, I like the word "CLEVELAND" spelled out in the front, which is reminiscent of the fairly popular Rawlings jerseys from the seventies and eighties that spelled out team names on the front of the jerseys, on top of the numbers. It is also similar to what a lot of college teams did, and perhaps still do.
However, the browns jerseys now have orange lettering for the numbers, which I do not like as much. Maybe if they were white with orange borders, it would have looked sharper.
In any case, I do not think that the uniform changes are so radical as to completely change the image of the team like, say, the Jacksonville Jaguars uniform changes a couple of years back made them look completely different (for the worse, I think).
Now that they got that out of their system, hopefully the Browns can begin to focus on improving their on the field results. It would be nice to see a winner by the lake.
Here is the link that got me on this topic. If you click on it, you can see all of the different uniform variations that you will likely see through the course of this season. Again, the uniforms are not that bad, and the brown pants with the white jerseys look better than ever (at least if you ask me). Not too thrilled with the brown jerseys and orange colored numbers. But overall, the team managed to retain the traditional look, by and large. They could have done worse and, in some cases, they actually did a bit better.
