Eli Manning: A Tribute to an ELIte Quarterback!

Later today, Eli Manning will be standing on the sidelines for a game for the New York Giants, watching Geno Smith start in his place. It marked the end of Manning's Iron Man starting streak with this team, which stands at 210 for at least a few more hours, but which will now end later today.

Many are suggesting that this effectively ends Manning's tenure with the Giants as the team's starting quarterback. It seems to me that this is a bit premature. Maybe I am being naive here, but there have been plenty of seeming end of the road scenarios before with other sports stars, and then often times, they come back. That said, I will certainly admit that things seem a bit grim at this point.

If this does prove to indeed be it, it has been a great run. During his tenure with the New York Giants, Manning has produced some great memories. Obviously, the top memories would be the two Super Bowl victories which he started for the team, and he won Super Bowl MVP honors for both championships. He led the team to the playoffs five times overall, compiling an 8-3 record in all in those playoff contests. Manning went to the Pro Bowl four times, and his numbers suggest that he is in all likelihood the most accomplished quarterback in franchise history, with 4,287 completions in 7,158 attempts (a completion rating of just under 60 percent) for 50,307 yards and 334 touchdowns, with 221 interceptions. His career passer rating overall was 84.0.

Not bad at all.

Frankly, I do not believe that the disastrous couple of seasons on offense that the Giants had to endure is his fault. He has proven that he can get the job done when the chips are down, but he cannot do it alone. When the Giants had an abysmal offensive line last year, they needed to use the time during the off-season to strengthen it. Instead, they focused in an adding more talent (and spending more money) to an already loaded group of wide receivers, and most of them were injured within the first few weeks. The Giants had no running game, and Manning received little protection.

As a Giants fan, I just wanted to offer this little tribute to Manning, who I think probably is indeed the best quarterback the Giants have had. He took the team to two Super Bowls, and played great in both of them, obviously! You do not get to win the MVP award if you were ineffective, and he was amazing through particularly two playoff runs that saw the G-Men stand proudly as champions once again.

An amazing career, and impressive stats and leadership as the Giants starting quarterback. There is speculation that he will be playing on another team soon. Most frequently mentioned are the Jacksonville Jaguars, where Manning's former head coach, Tom Coughlin, wound up.

That may very well be. But wherever Manning goes - assuming he goes anywhere - he will always be a Giant to me.
