One of the main problems in the west - and especially here in the United States - today, is the overabundance of narcissists. We have become fixated with people who think the world of themselves, and who feel that they have all of the answers.
Seriously, just look at the man who we Americans elected as President! Here is a man completely full of himself, needing to have his name all over the place, including in bright neon lights towering over modern city skylines. He claims to know more about enemies than his own generals, claims to know more about science than scientists, and claims to know more about economics than economists. Americans have been warned, time and again, about loud and boastful people. Yet, it is a loud and boastful culture, and so it seemed like a matter of time before we elected such a hollow man so full of himself as we did.
A narcissist can only really succeed on such a level inside of a society that is itself narcissistic. Trump would never have been elected President under more normal times, frankly. I mean, let's be honest: he should have been laughed out of the race last year, even. But he would not have been taken seriously, and would have been viewed as the clown that he really is, just a few short decades ago.
Truly, it is a sign of the times that we live in that a so-called "reality television" star now sits in the Oval Office. If ever there was proof that people believe only what they want to believe, it is in witnessing Trump as the man in charge in the White House. To think of some of the great and restrained leaders that we have had in that office, some of the brilliant minds, and to then look at the big mouth and empty shell that we have in there right now is, quite frankly, sickening.
So, we have to look out for narcissists now more than ever, because they are more prevalent in our society than they ever have been before.
To that end, it seemed useful to read this article, which I definitely thought would be worth sharing here:
