Coronavirus Update for Saturday, May 16, 2020

It has been a while since the last time that I did that. And there have a lot of significant changes since the last time that I did one of these.

So, let’s take a look.

There have been well over four and a half million cases of coronavirus worldwide, now, and more than 300,000 deaths globally. Meanwhile, more than 1,758,000 people have recovered. Those are the statistics around the globe.

Now, as far as countries are concerned, the United States still has far and away the most confirmed cases of Covid-19 of any country in the world. It has had over 1,484,000 people with the coronavirus, and there have been well over 88,000 deaths. Meanwhile, over 325,000 have recovered from it. The United States has had more than a quarter of all the confirmed Covid-19 cases in the world, as well as over a quarter of the deaths from Covid-19 around the world, despite having less than five percent of the world population. And let’s face it: nobody in the world these days is looking for leadership on this from Washington.

So, let’s move on.

Several European nations would rank as the next nations with the most cases, and the most deaths. Spain still has the second most confirmed cases, with over 274,000 cases, and has suffered well over 27,000 deaths. Russia has shot up in cases, ranking third in the world now with over 262,000 cases of Covid-19. The United Kingdom now ranks fourth in the world, with over 236,000 confirmed cases, and has suffered the second most amounts of death, with just shy of 34,000 deaths. Italy has the fifth most amount of confirmed coronavirus cases with more than 223,000 cases, and the third most deaths of any nation in the world, with over 31,000. France has the seventh most confirmed cases in the world with over 179,000 cases, and has seen the fourth most amounts of deaths, with over 27,000, more or less very similar to Spain. Finally, Germany has over 175,000 cases, yet have suffered only slightly more than 8.000 deaths.

Yet, Europe is doing it's best to reopen. Beaches in France and Greece, for example, are opening to the public, albeit with restrictions.

Brazil now ranks sixth in the world, in terms of confirmed Covid-19 cases, with just over 220,000 cases, and has seen just under 15,000 deaths. Turkey has the ninth most confirmed cases, with over 146,000 cases, with just over 4,000 deaths. Iran currently ranks 10th, with over 116,000 cases, and over 6,900 cases.

India, the country with the second largest population in the world, and which seems to be quickly catching up to China and will likely soon overtake it, now has the 11th most amount of cases, with over 85,000 confirmed cases, and just over 2, 750 cases.

Nepal, meanwhile, suffered it's first confirmed coronavirus death earlier today.

As with previous updates on the coronavirus crisis around the globe, these statistics were taken from the Worldometer website, which keeps track of these stats.
