A very alarming trend in recent days, as anonymous security agents, with no identity markers other than a generic label of "POLICE" started to pick up American citizens and detain them, bringing them into unmarked vehicles and taking them away.
This happened in recent days in Portland, Oregon, in response to "Black Lives Matter" protests. This anonymous police force - again, it is not yet certain what government agency they actually work for and represent - came in wearing camouflage uniforms, and taking the liberty of detaining protesters without any kind of identifying procedures.
There was some suspicion that these agents were from the U.S. Marshals, but they are denying any involvement.
It is still unclear exactly who these individuals were, or what force or government agency they actually work for or represent.
This is unlike anything else that we have seen here in the United States. The ACLU warned that this is a very disturbing trend, and that all American citizens should be worried about this.
Indeed, there are a number of comparisons being made in news articles and social media stories covering this story, and pointing out that this is eerily reminiscent of dictatorships in third world countries, where political opponents would be "disappeared."
Some have suggested that this mysterious police force is, in fact, a product of Donald Trump. If so, Trump may be testing the waters for more such instances in the future, presumably extending these tactics beyond Portland. Many critics are arguing that this is yet the clearest sign to date that the country is moving closer to dictatorship.

This is one of the scariest things to happen in an already terrifying administration. THIS COUNTRY HAS TO WAKE UP!!
ReplyDeleteIt is indeed. We are so clearly on the wrong path. Yet, his genuinely clueless supporters continue to plug their ears to any criticism of him and his policies. Dark days for America.
DeleteI'm reminded of those anti-war protests we attended in NYC. There were cops there with no identifying badges and with their faces concealed, and they were clearly in a fighting mood. If you'll recall, one of them even shoved Mom. Not hard, but the fact that he laid his hands on her at all speaks volumes about the mentality you're up against – and the calculated risk you take – when you exercise what is theoretically your constitutionally protected right to peacefully assemble and protest. I'm once again reminded of that line from "Know Your Rights" by The Clash: "You have the right to free speech, as long as you're not dumb enough to actually try it."
DeleteAgreed. It seems to be getting worse, with the intolerant fascists growing ever bolder and feeling more empowered by Trump
DeleteGeorge Carlin: "When fascism comes to America, it will not be in brown and black shirts. It will not be with jack-boots. It will be Nike sneakers and Smiley shirts … Germany lost the Second World War. Fascism won it."
ReplyDeleteFrank Zappa: "The illusion of freedom will continue as long as it's profitable to continue the illusion. At the point where the illusion becomes too expensive to maintain, they will just take down the scenery, they will pull back the curtains, they will move the tables and chairs out of the way and you will see the brick wall at the back of the theater."
