Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs Lock Up Patrick Mahomes For a Decade With Stunning New Contract

You just knew that the hot young quarterback Patrick Mahomes was going to receive a big payday, didn’t you?

He appears to be a generational talent at that all important position of quarterback. I mean, who ever opened his football career in such explosive fashion?

In 2018 as a rookie, he became the third quarterback in history, he had one of the best seasons that any quarterback ever had. He passed for over 5,000 yards, which at the time was only the 11th time that had happened. Few quarterbacks have managed that feat (some more than once), and Mahomes found himself in good company, along names like Drew Brees (who achieved the feat five times overall), Dan Marino, Tom Brady, Matt Stafford, Peyton Manning, and Ben Roethlisberger. Additionally, Mahomes threw 50 touchdowns, becoming only the third quarterback in NFL history to have thrown that many touchdowns in a regular season, with Peyton Manning and Tom Brady being the other two quarterbacks.

For all of that, Mahomes won the NFL MVP award, and deservedly so. The Chiefs were an elite team, reaching a mark of 12-4, with the most explosive offense in the league. They won the AFC West and earned the number one seed in the AFC playoffs. They reached the AFC Championship Game for only the second time since they won Super Bowl IV, and for the first time since the 1993 season, when Joe Montana was their quarterback, when they lost to the Buffalo Bills.

Then, he followed that up by leading the Chiefs to yet another AFC West title with a 12-4 record, good for the second seed in the AFC playoffs. They overcame a 24-0 deficit to Houston to win by blowout in the divisional round, and then overcame a 10-point deficit to Tennessee in their second straight AFC title game to earn the franchise’s first Super Bowl berth in half a century. He had was playing uncharacteristically poorly for most of the day in the big game against San Francisco, but then suddenly came alive late in the fourth quarter, with his team trailing by 10 points. Suddenly, a tough 49ers defense that had frustrated KC’s offense all day could not seem to do anything to stop or even slow down the suddenly red hot Chiefs, led by Mahomes. Many people marveled that he could have such a bad game, and then shake it off at the most pressured moment, becoming the asset that almost everyone knew he was. Kansas City scored 21 unanswered points, finally winning the Super Bowl title and ending a 50-year drought, and becoming the first franchise in history to overcome double digit leads in three consecutive postseason contests. In the process, Mahomes earned the Super Bowl MVP. He appears in great position to lead the team to future championships and to enjoy some great seasons. Many expect them to be the next dynasty, with one title already under their belt.

That is quite the resume for a player who is only entering his third season now.

Now, he has an unbelievable contract that, at least for the time being, makes him the highest paid athlete in at least North American sports. It is worth more than half a billion, at least conditionally. Even if Mahomes gets injured and sees his incredibly promising career end prematurely, he will be making a ton of money. That is already guaranteed well before he ever steps on the field as the starting quarterback for the team that won it all last season. And he was no small part of them finally shedding their long nagging limitations and finally winning it all for the first time in half a century, for that matter.

And he will be a very wealthy man already the next time that he takes the field for the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.
