Coronavirus Update for Wednesday, July 8, 2020

Around the world, there are now just shy of officially 12 million people who have confirmed coronavirus cases. To date, over 546,000 people have globally have died, while over 6,900,000 have recovered.

Right now, the United States still has far and away more confirmed coronavirus cases, as well as more deaths from it, than any other country. We have had well over three million confirmed cases, with over 133,000 deaths, while over 1,354,000 have recovered. The United States still has more than one quarter of the overall confirmed cases, and nearly one quarter of all the confirmed deaths from Covid-19.

Brazil continues to rise dramatically with the coronavirus. President Jaio Bolsonaro, who like Trump, had long continued to downplay the seriousness of Covid-19, had to admit that he had tested positive for the virus. And overall, Brazil now has over 1,674,000 confirmed cases, and well over 66,000 deaths to date. Both confirmed cases and deaths from the coronavirus have been rising dramatically in recent weeks in Brazil. That said, there are over 1,117,000 people in Brazil who have officially recovered. Brazil ranks second in confirmed cases and deaths, behind the United States. Many experts believe that the real numbers in Brazil are actually far higher than the official numbers.

India is another country that has seen a dramatic spike in confirmed cases, as well as deaths. There are now over 744,000 confirmed cases in India, which ranks third among all nations, and it recently became only the eighth nation in the world to reach the 20,000 death level from coronavirus. That said, there have been over 457,000 recovered in India to date.

Russia still ranks fourth among all nations in the world with over 694,000 confirmed cases, although the death toll remains relatively low compared to many other nations, with over 10,000 to date. There have been over 463,000 total recoveries.

Joining Brazil in South American, Peru and Chile became only the fifth and sixth nations to reach the 300,000 confirmed cases level. Peru has over 309,0000, with approaching 11,000 deaths. Chile, meanwhile, has over 301,000 confirmed cases, with well over 6,000 confirmed deaths. Both countries each have over 200,000 recovered.

Europe remains a hotspot for the coronavirus. Spain has just under 300,000 confirmed cases, with over 28,000 deaths to date. Britain has over 286,000 confirmed cases, with over 44,000 deaths, which is the third highest number of deaths of any nation in the world, behind the USA and Brazil. Italy has over 240,000 confirmed cases, with just under 35,000 deaths to date, the fourth most number of deaths from coronavirus of any nation. Germany has over 198,000 confirmed cases, with just over 9,000 deaths so far, while France has over 168,000 confirmed cases, and approaching 30,000 deaths.

Otherwise, Mexico is also a major hotspot, with over 268,000 cases, and over 32,000 deaths, the fifth highest number of any nation.
