RIP, Eddie Van Halen

It is with extreme sadness that I found out about the passing of former guitarist great Eddie Van Halen, who died of cancer yesterday.

While I was never the biggest fan of Van Halen - there were some really huge fans of that band back during my elementary and high school days – I nevertheless enjoyed listening to that band’s music, particularly in the eighties with Eddie Van Halen. They were huge, and it was hard to ignore them back in the mid-eighties, when they were seemingly at the height of their power after releasing 1984. For a while, it felt like they were dominating the airwaves with that album, and I remember hearing it everywhere back then. All of the kids seemed to like it, and it made a huge splash that was undeniable.

Eddie Van Halen was an incredible guitarist, with a unique approach to his playing guitar. He sounded like no one else at the time.

A few years after 1984, David Lee Roth and Van Halen went their separate ways. Sammy Hagar took over, but it never felt like they were quite the same band with Hagar. Yet, the one time that I went to see Van Halen in concert, it was with Hagar, although I would have loved to have seen David Lee Roth with the band, back in the day.

This was a sad bit of news, as we lost yet another music legend. But he brought a lot of joy to millions with his music, which lives on.

Rest in peace, Eddie Van Halen.
