Yes, it is still a very close race, with several states still being considered too close to call. The biggest state, considered the prize, would be Pennsylvania. But there is also Georgia, Arizona, and Nevada, as well as North Carolina. Some are still trying to challenge Wisconsin and Michigan, even though those two races had already gone in favor of Biden.
Trump, who declared victory on election night, just as many had predicted he would, once again made a highly publicized and controversial address on the election last evening. While Joe Biden urged calm, and insisted that all the votes needed to be counted, Trump suggested once again that there was massive voter fraud, without offering a shred of concrete proof. According to him, he won decisively among legal votes, implying that a decisive chunk of the votes that pushed Biden ahead were illegal.
Of course, many of his loyal supporters believe him, regardless of the lack of evidence. They have spent four years believing everything that he says, despite his well-established history of being a liar, even dating many years before he ever ran for the White House. Many of them have protested the counting facilities, particularly in Maricopa County in Arizona, where they tried to gain entry. Police were required to try and maintain order. With the increased presence of militants, there is also an obvious increase in the chance for violence. It is hard to imagine Trump suddenly reversing course and calling for calm and peace. After all, he also has a well-established history of manipulating people for his own benefit, and has been trying to fire up his loyal supporters by warning them about this alleged (by him) massive voter fraud.
This is more or less exactly the kind of scenario that many people, myself included, kind of expected. Trump is a polarizing figure, and while many of his supporters really came out to vote and show their support (he received four million more votes than he did in 2016), nevertheless there were a ton of people who also made a point of voting this time specifically to try and get him out of the Oval Office, as well.
We shall see. It was almost assured to be an election quite unlike any other that we have seen, even including 2016. So far, it is most assuredly living up to that billing.
The counting continues. Right now, Biden 47,000 in Arizona, and well over 11,000 in Nevada. Biden managed to take a very narrow lead in Georgia, as he is now up by 917, according to the latest reports, which means that if his lead holds, Georgia will have gone to a Democrat for the first time since 1992, when Bill Clinton won that state against George H. W. Bush. Biden is narrowing the lead in Pennsylvania, as he is now trailing in that state by just over 18,000.
Stay tuned, because there is plenty more news that we will be seeing over the coming days.
