Sad news from France today. Singer, actress, and fashion designer Jane Birkin, who used to be the lover of French music icon Serge Gainsbourg, has died. She was 76.
According to the New York Times article linked below:
Her death was confirmed by President Emmanuel Macron of France, who called her “a French icon” in a message on Twitter. The French news media reported that Ms. Birkin had been found dead at her home but that the cause was not immediately known.
Birkin was an actress who met Serge Gainsbourg while co-starring alongside him in a film in 1968. They became a couple. The two soon got engaged, and Birkin's career in movies as well as a singer took off. She spent the rest of her life living in France. Later, she also helped to create her own line of designer handbags, which tend to be quite pricey.
Some years ago, I saw Jane Birkin with my father at Florence Gould Hall at the French Institute Alliance Francaise in New York City. It was a good show. She actually signed some stuff, including a copy of her music cd, as well as the ticket stub. Unfortunately, I did not find it on time to take a picture for this particular blog entry. Still, it was an enjoyable show, and I was glad to have gone and seen it. It was almost astonishing, how good she looked. She looked better than most women thirty years younger.
In any case, she was obviously quite talented and herself well-accomplished, and lived to see some amazing things and times. She will be missed.
RIP, Jane Birkin.
