Trump is Very, Very Bad For America .

Well, here it is. Election day, 2020. A day that I have both been looking forward to, and paradoxically dreading, for a very long time now. Years. Probably ever since that horrible evening in November of 2016, when Donald Trump stunned the world by winning the White House in the election.

I say looking forward to, because it sometimes feels like his defeat is inevitable.

I say dreading for more reasons, because it often felt like his defeat was inevitable back in 2016, and look what happened. Dreading also, because both candidates, Biden and Trump, are mediocre, even if Biden is the lesser of two evils. But I also say dreading, because even if he loses, it seems to me that surely, Trump will declare himself the winner on Election Day. Like Bill Maher, it seemed obvious to me as soon as he won in 2016 that we would never easily be rid of Trump. That he would never, ever refuse to admit to any kind of defeat. His enormous ego just won't let him. I also say dreading because if that happens, if Trump does what everyone predicts he will, and declare himself the winner, his mindless supporters will believe him, and possibly be ready to take up arms if and when that is challenged, even if Trump loses, and clearly, at that. A scenario like that can quickly descend into chaos, which this Fake President thrives on. In all seriousness, I am not sure most Americans even realize how much of their democracy they have already compromised, if not lost, nor how close we really are to another civil war. Indeed, some militant groups already feel we are in one.

So yes, dreading this day, as well. Because unlike other election days, where I felt the drama would only go up until that point when one candidate is officially declared a winner, I am not so sure about this one. I would love to believe that Biden can and will win, and that a new era for this country will arise on the morning of January 21st, the day after inauguration day, when we wake up and Biden started the new day as president, and Trump is just a bad memory. I do not mention the actual inauguration, because it feels like Trump will not peacefully transfer his power if he loses this election. But man, would it be nice if indeed, we have a new president officially installed on the 21st, and day one of undoing the Trump stain on this country begins. Let us hope that this is the scenario that plays out. We shall see, but it begins today.

So here is a paradox: I long suspected that someone like Donald Trump (in terms of polarization and setting back the clock for the country, and perhaps the world) would rise to the top political office in the United States, I never would have actually suspected that it would be Trump, a slick New York business tycoon with a stunning level of arrogance and a false sense of entitlement, to say nothing of his addiction to a glossy lifestyle, beautiful women used as a status symbol, and an addiction to trying to make headlines.

Here is another paradox: while I cannot stand Trump and what he represents, not to mention what he has done to this country, there is no one who seems as fitting, in a strange way, to be the head of the country. Seriously, he personally embodies all of the worst excesses of the nation: constantly playing the victim when, in fact, he has victimized more people than probably anyone else I know of. A wealthy man born to incredible privileges who nevertheless complains more frequently and more loudly about how poorly he has been treated than anyone else. A man who claims to be a genius, but often sounds outright like an ignorant moron. A man who claims to basically have created his own fortunes, but who received stunning levels of help along the way. A man who claims to be incredibly wealthy, yet who hides his personal finances from the public, and who as it turns out, owes far more money than he can pay off. A man who never seemed particularly political, and seemed to flip back and forth between political ideologies (he used to support a single payer, universal healthcare system like the one championed by Bernie Sanders), and then decides to run, and effectively makes his positions up as he goes along, and who allows other experts (Steve Bannon in particular comes to mind) to mold his political platform into a seemingly coherent whole. A man who lies all of the time, yet who his supporters insist is a beacon of truth, indeed perhaps the only source of real truth today.

The paradoxes are staggering, but they do not end there. After all, he symbolizes the country that he now leads in so many ways, and by and large, not in any flattering ways. For a very long time, the United States was the world’s leading superpower, and it also tended to flaunt this status in a loud and often obnoxious way that did not exactly win it friends all around the world. It intervened in foreign affairs all around the world, and fought some wars that it likely never should have fought, earning more enemies. It remains – at least for now – the world’s leading superpower in terms of military and economic might, although many Americans feel that the country is clearly in a state of serious decline, and many of these same Americans, both to the left and to the right, act like victims in this regard, and believe that the world community has treated the country unfairly. And far too often, much like Donald Trump himself, when the message from this country has lacked substance and/or logic, the reliance instead has been on repeating things and increasing the volume. For example, the ridiculously and obviously false claims that Saddam Hussein was linked to the September 11th attacks - which the Bush administration largely fed into, but which it also denied – and hyping Saddam’s Iraq into what would have amounted to them being a de facto world superpower, all in order to justify the unjustifiable invasion back in March of 2003.

Indeed, many people all around the world look at the United States today as a country clearly on the decline. Some people voted for Trump in order to stop this downward spiral, and to make America strong again. For many other people – most Americans, and most people around the world – Trump’s political rise was itself the clearest and most undeniable sign yet of this very decline, and feel that he has hastened this decline dramatically.

To me, Trump symbolizes the American decline. Often, the United States has been compared to the Roman Empire, and if we can make this comparison, than Trump feels like the arrogant Roman Emperors that we have heard about, and which are portrayed sometimes in popular American movies (like Gladiator). If we take that comparison a little but further, the blatant levels of corruption so evident in Congress that have become the norm, and which have been so blatant as to basically be out in the open, is yet another sign of a serious fall.

Nor are the levels of decadence restricted only to government, for that matter. Look around the country, and it seems undeniable that Americans, who have seen their economy alter from a manufacturing economy to a service economy, have become addicted with luxuries, often mistaking them for necessities. We have fought wars which, for many average Americans, were fought largely to keep oil prices in check, while many of the most staunch supporters of these wars unnecessarily drove around in gas-guzzling SUV’s and pick up trucks. We are collectively fixated on trash television, and this has contributed to the American people increasingly earning a reputation around the world for being dumb.

Americans seem to want to be entertained at any cost, and so it was only natural that this would spread to our politics. Think about how the country seems to have shortened it’s attention span, and it then becomes easier to understand why much of the political discourse that we hear comes down to soundbites and three or four themes that are relentlessly repeated by both sides. It may have started as early as the 1960’s, when a handsome and youthful looking John F. Kennedy seemed to embody the very best characteristics that Americans believed of themselves. In the debate with Nixon, many listening on the radio felt that Nixon had actually won. But those who watched on television, and saw the handsome and confident looking Kennedy appearing far more in his element than the sweaty Nixon, felt that Kennedy had won. Ultimately, he won the election.

Since then, we have voted in a successful actor, Ronald Reagan, who played the part of the president that many, if not most, Americans wanted. He is still held up as a model of a successful president, to the point that Barack Obama held Reagan as the model for a successful presidency. And now, we have a reality star who has been elected to the top office. His credentials were very questionable when he was running and after winning the election, and they have not improved since he took power, for that matter. He has lied as a matter of habit, has actively polarized the people of the country, has rolled back environmental protections and censored any viewpoints that contradict what he believes. He has been condemned the world over on numerous occasions, from his refusal to clearly condemn outright Nazis, to pulling the United States out of the Paris Climate Accord and nuclear deals, to mindless comments where he dismissed countries in Central America and Africa as “shithole nations.” And, of course, he disbanded the White House Pandemic Team quickly after taking power, and then looked and sounded completely unprepared when a pandemic reared it’s ugly head earlier this year.

Through it all, he tries to appear strong, claiming things that are so obviously not true, that they would be comical under other circumstances. Yes, his claims should be laughable, except that there are tens of millions of people who believe him, even when it seems clearly to be untrue and/or wrong. This has led to some obvious comparisons with the reality in the United States today, and that of the fictional, dictatorial model of George Orwell’s 1984, where up is down, and where the state dictates what is right and what is wrong, so that 2+2 can equal 5. In Donald Trump’s America, the vast majority of experts in any given field are viewed with skepticism, while hucksters and snake oil salesmen, like Trump himself, claim ridiculous answers without a shred of proof. Trump and his family claim that the Covid-19 crisis is largely over and done, even though the numbers in recent days have set new records for infections.

And this is what has won out in our political sphere. Right now, Trump is in the Oval Office, and Republicans in Congress have bent over backwards to accommodate his every move, his every whim.

Sad times for this country, and indeed, for the world.

Donald Trump basically amounts to one thing, above all, and it is this: might makes right. Just like in Orwell’s 1984, where the state ultimately dictated reality because it had the might, Trump gets away with anything and everything because he has had the audacity to keep gambling, and unfortunately, winning. It has been to the detriment of the entire country.

The question in this election, as I see it, is whether or not we will allow the doctrine of “Might Makes Right” to continue to rule, to gain a stronger hold over the government, and thus, over our lives. Both sides often turn to the wisdom of the Founding Fathers for guidance. But if the Founding Fathers seemed to advocate anything, in my opinion, it clearly was in trying to protect the country from a tyrant who believes too deeply in the self-serving notion of might makes right. And we have someone like that now, who is actively trying to get rid of the system of checks and balances and always seeking to gain more power.

In the United States, which it bears repeating, remains the world’s most powerful country, the notion that absolute power corrupts absolutely is now being practiced by our supposed leaders, and in full view of everyone. The danger of Trump is that he is blatant about his lust for power, and increasingly, he clearly does not see any reason to even be secretive about his corrupt ways of doing things. He understands that Americans have grown dumber, and that his supporters have become loyal to a fault. Trump lies all of the time, but there is one thing that he said about his supporters that stands out more than any other that he said, and which rings true: he could shoot someone in a crowded New York City street in broad daylight, and not lose his loyal supporters. It seemed like a shocking thing for him to have said at the time, but what is infinitely more shocking is that time has proven this to be true. His supporters never question or scrutinize anything that he does. He can – and does – get away with literally anything and everything that he wants, and his supporters will always be there, stomping their feet and cheering loudly, proclaiming that he is keeping his promises.

That is why he needs to be stopped, before this style of blatantly corrupt and authoritarian leadership becomes the norm. If we are to salvage anything from our democratic traditions before Trump stomps them to the ground, then it has to happen now. We cannot wait until 2024, and remember that Trump has suggested on more than one occasion that his supporters might insist that he run for a third term. Already, eh was simply assuming that he would get that second term, and even though the polls clearly show him losing this election in almost all projections, he has suggested that he would not necessarily accept the results, and has not committed to a peaceful transition of power, even if he loses fair and square. If he loses, and then claims – as he surely will – that the election was one big fraud, and that he did not lose legitimately, then those tens of millions of his loyal supporters will also not accept it. And when he incites them to take action, that can easily lead to violence, even possibly a civil war. No, I am not exaggerating, because that, more than the actual election results, is what I am most worried about in the coming weeks and months. That is what makes him dangerous.

It has been said that every empire in history has fallen after becoming too inward looking. Sadly, that seems to be happening here in the United States. Right now, it feels very much the case, as we have a man in charge who reflects this, because he is like Narcissus of ancient Greek mythology: all he sees is himself and his own delusions of grandeur. And increasingly, the country is also blinded by this cult of personality, which has become, arguably, yet astonishingly, bigger than the country itself.

Ultimately, I feel that this is the question that the country is actually grappling with. Are we, as a country, bigger than Donald Trump and his infamous ego, as well as the prejudices and hatred that he enables and even tacitly encourages? Or are we witnessing the final stand of what once was a pretty decent democracy, when we finally drop the pretense of being the world's leading democracy, and go all in for a de facto imperial presidency that is a democracy in name only?

I wish that I could express confidence that we will choose wisely. But the best that I can say right now, since certainty either way just is not there, is this: let's hope, and let's wait and see.

One thing we maybe should keep in order to maintain some sanity is humor. And so I go back to comedian Stephen Colbert, who imitated a boxing announcer's famous line, "Are you ready to rumble?" and altered it a bit for comic effect, to show just how far our democracy as deteriorated already. So borrowing from Colbert, I am using his line here to end this particular blog entry, as we all await the results of this election:

“Get ready for democracy to crumble!"

In the meantime, while we are waiting. it seemed like a good idea to share a link to a video that seems like a plausible foreshadowing of what is likely to happen on Election Night, and the days that follow. Also, the man doing the video, Lee Camp, explains why the polls wind up so often being dead wrong so often. It is not a happy, feel good video, but it is something that Americans should understand. So please watch (sorry, but I am not able to upload any videos because of the problems that I currently have been experiencing with this blog page):

NFL 2020 Week 8 Review

We are already in November, the midway point of the season. Thanksgiving is right around the corner. And we entered this first weekend with one undefeated team left, and one winless team remaining, as well. In terms of continuity, that one undefeated team is still unbeaten, while the winless team fell once again.

But we had some big games, with possible playoff implications this weekend, as well. The 5-2 Bears hosted the 4-2 Saints, and Chicago actually entered that game in first place in the NFC North following Green Bay's surprising home loss to the Vikings. The Cowboys went up to Philadelphia to play the Eagles in a showdown for first place in the NFC East. The Steelers took their unbeaten record on the road to face the Ravens. The Browns hosted the Raiders. Seattle hosted San Fran. So yes, some big games with possible playoff ramifications, to be sure.

Let's take a look at the week that was:

Kansas City 35, NY Jets 9 - You know it is not a good thing when you enter a game with historic levels odds against you. KC was favored by 21 points to open the week up, and it only went down slightly after that. And the scary thing is that they covered, and easily, at that. Yes, the Chiefs jumped all over Gang Green early and often, and just overpowered the Jets. The Chiefs offense was solid, and their defense was on point. Then again, it seems like Gang Green's offense makes all other defensive units look dominant, but this really was a mismatch, with the Chiefs rolling early, and never looking back. KC improves to 7-1 on the season, staying hot, and they will next host the Panthers. Meanwhile, the Jets match their franchise worst start to a season at 0-8. They started off that way in 1996 as well, before winning the following week. Their next game is against their division rivals, the New England Patriots, who are also suffering through a dismal season, to date. My pick: Accurate

Buffalo 24, New England 21 - Usually, when a 5-2 division leading team hosts the third place team at 2-4, it is not necessarily considered a big showdown, or a test for the first place team. But the New England Patriots are not your ordinary, run of the mill 2-4 team. They have enjoyed a very long run of success, having won "Team of the Decade" honors for two consecutive decades, the first time an NFL team has done that. And much of their success came at the expense of the other teams in their division, and none of that was symbolized as much as by the Buffalo Bills, the one team that the Patriots really seemed to own during the past two decades or so. That mean that the Bills, who are trying to finally shed their skin of underachievers, really needed to play big and find a way to win today against the Patriots. And they did it. Yes, it was a right game. But ultimately, a loss would have seriously set them back and cast doubt on their strong start, whereas a win solidifies their frontrunner status in the division. A huge win for the Bills to improve to 6-2, and another disappointing loss for the Patriots, who sink to 2-5 with their fourth consecutive loss. My pick: Accurate

Indianapolis 41, Detroit 21 - Well, home field advantage did not help the Lions anywhere near as much as I had expected it to. The Colts were just plain and simply the better team, by far. They were not dissuaded because they fell behind early, and once they got going, the Lions looked listless, like a heavyweight fighter powerless against a much better, faster, and more intelligent opponent. The Lions had been improving for a while, but this was a bad loss that sets them back, sinking them to 3-4 on the year. Meanwhile, the Colts improve to 5-2, having quietly worked their way to an almost elite status at the midseason approach, tying the formerly red hot Tennessee Titans for first place now. What a win for Indy! My pick: Inaccurate

Cincinnati 31, Tennessee 20 - Just a little more than a week ago, the Titans were undefeated, and fighting to stay that way against the AFC's only other undefeated team, the Steelers. Now, the Titans have lost two in a row, and this time, they lost to a lowly team. Yes, the Bengals are definitely improving, and Joe Burough looks excellent, like he was a great pick up for this franchise. But if the Titans are going to be an elite team this season, these are the kinds of games that they need to win. So this was a huge disappointment for them, but an exciting win that will surely make Cincinnati feel good. My pick: Inaccurate

Minnesota 28, Green Bay 22 - Not the result I was expecting. But the Vikings defense played tough, and kept the explosive Packers offense in check. They also saw big production from running back Dalvin Cook, who picked up 163 yards and four touchdowns against Green Bay. For perhaps the first time this season, Minnesota looked like the playoff caliber team that many expected them to be, and which they were last season, when they made it all the way to the divisional round of the NFC playoffs. They improve to 2-5 on the season, but still have a long way to go to dig themselves out of the hole that they are still in. As for the Packers, the loss drops them to 5-2 on the season. My pick: Inaccurate

Miami 28, LA Rams 17 - Wow! The Dolphins are suddenly looking like a scary team right now. Yes, they pulled off their third straight win by beating the Rams. Miami absolutely exploded in the first half, jumping out to a 28-7 lead, and then hung on for the win the rest of the way. The Rams offense still looks erratic, and you never know which Rams team you are going to get from week to week. But what a huge win for the Fins, as they improve to 4-3, a winning record and second place in the AFC East. Meanwhile, the Rams fall to 5-3 with another disappointing and costly loss, as they fall behind the Cardinals now and move into third in the NFC West. My pick: Inaccurate

Las Vegas 16, Cleveland 6 - Up until this point, the Browns had looked good, like they were fulfilling expectations for a promising season. But on an incredibly ugly day weatherwise in Cleveland, the Browns just played uninspired football. The Raiders did not produce too much offense, but their defense was able to ground the Browns and held up what the Vegas offense managed to produce, for a convincing road win far from home for the Raiders, improving their record to 4-3 on the season. The Browns, meanwhile, sin to 5-3 on the season, and suffer their first home loss of the season to boot. My pick: Inaccurate

Seattle 37, San Francisco 27 - This was a tough game, between two serious playoff contenders. The Seahawks entered with an impressive 5-1 record, yet they needed to win this one to stay ahead in the very tough NFC West. Meanwhile, the defending NFC champs San Francisco had pulled off an impressive comeback, and improved to 4-3 on the season, but we hoping to win to get back into the NFC West race, and keep the Seahawks within their sites. But Seattle's offense, led by veteran quarterback Russell Wilson, was solid, They just kept scoring when they needed it the most, even against an elite 49ers defense, as they outlasted San Fran in this one to earn a solid 37-27 win to improve to 6-1, and dropping the 49ers to 4-4 on the year. My pick: Accurate

New Orleans 26, Chicago 23 - This was a hard fought game between two teams that figure to be in the playoff race for the second half of the season, at the very least. The Saints still do not quite look or feel like the dominant team that many people (myself included) expected them to be. Yet, they overcame a tough challenge from the Bears in the frigid Windy City, coming back to just edge Da Bears out and earn their fourth consecutive win to improve to 5-2 on the season. As for the Bears, they actually, technically entered this game in first place in the division due to the Packers loss earlier in the day. But they gave that away in losing this particular game, and now drop to 5-3, once again second place in the NFC North. They played fairly well through most of the game, but just could not seal the deal when it counted the most. My pick: Accurate

Denver 31, LA Chargers 30 - In a game between two teams tied for last place in the AFC West, both teams played well, and it turned into an exciting game. Both sides showed some heart and highlight reels, although ultimately, the Broncos pulled off the tight win by a single point to hold off the Chargers, as they improve to 3-4 on the season. The Chargers, meanwhile, drop to 2-5, and all alone in last place now in the division. My pick: Accurate

Sunday Night Football: Philadelphia 23, Dallas 9 - For a little while, it looked like the Cowboys might actually pull off a small stunner. Yes, towards the end of the second quarter, and then for a decent amount of time in the third, the Cowboys looked sharper, capitalizing off Eagles turnovers and mistakes, and seeming to own the momentum. They were clinging to a narrow 9-7 lead, although it felt like they possessed all of the momentum. Then one great drive culminating in an Eagles touchdown, and the game reversed itself completely, and Philly just never looked back. Already alone in first place in the NFC East, the Eagles expanded their lead with the win, improving to 3-4-1 on the year. As for the 'Boys, this was yet another loss in a season that is quickly spiraling out of control. They were once the easy favorites for many to emerge not only as NFC East champions, but some people thought that they could and should come out as the NFC representatives in the Super Bowl. But some early losses, followed by their being hit hard with injuries, has turned this season into a complete disaster. This loss dropped them to 2-6 on the season, as the distance between them and the first place Eagles, as well as second place Washington, now continues to grow. Another bad loss in a once promising season that feels increasingly like a lost season for the Cowboys. My pick: Accurate

Monday Night Football: Tampa Bay at NY Giants - The Buccaneers entered this game with a ton of momentum, and some even had them as one of the elite teams in the league! Meanwhile, the Giants came in with a 1-6 mark, one of the worst in the league, and the worst record in the NFC presently, with wins by both the Falcons and the Vikings effectively setting the Giants up as alone at the bottom of the entire NFC standings. Another tight,  narrow loss for the G-Men in a season seemingly filled with such losses.  They played well,  but still fell short in the end.  Too many costly mistakes, particularly by quarterback Daniel Jones.  Another solid win for the Buccaneers,  who are looking more like a legitimate contender with each passing week.  My pick: Accurate

My Son's 15th Birthday

Today is my son's 15th birthday. Hard to believe that it has now been fully a decade and a half since that unforgettable day when he entered this world. There is absolutely nothing to compare with the impact that bringing a new life into this world has, and I have felt absolutely grateful and blessed for his presence in my life. It is no stretch to suggest that he has made me a better man, in every way. Recently, I found this while doing some cleaning. This is one of the very first pictures, or perhaps maybe even the very first still picture of him just after he was born at 10:08 in the morning on November 2, 2005. The man in the picture is the doctor who officially delivered him. For the life of me, his name is not coming to me at all, unfortunately. Not sure where it came from, if it was put up in the hospital or my job, or somewhere else that I might not be remembering. But it seemed like something worth sharing on the anniversary of that most special day, the day that my life changed forever, and for the better, by Sebastien officially becoming a part of it.

Review of Unfit: The Psychology of Donald Trump .

By now, many of us have seen some news reports or at least parts of television shows where there are warnings abut Donald Trump and all that he stands for. We have heard experts on radio and television warn us about him, or comment in horror about this or that action that he has taken, or some ridiculous thing that he has said. We have seen his supporters feel ever more emboldened, to the point where they are increasingly taking matters into their own hand, such as when far-right white nationalists, actually white supremacists, feel more legitimized and emboldened than ever before, or how a 17-year-old kid decides to take his gun and go to the site of riots, or when a group of men calling themselves the Proud Boys takes their arms to try and intimidate anti-Trump protesters, or when a group of right-wing radicals not only concocts, but actually acts on some half-baked plans to kidnap the sitting governor, and then to take her away and try her, with the predetermined judgement being the death sentence, which they apparently meant to act out on.

One of the most informative, and frankly alarming, programs that I have seen on the current state of America right now is Frontline: America's Great Divide. It is a two-part series, and it is both incredibly depressing and terrifying regarding the direction that this country is headed in. Yet, despite it obviously being far from comfortable, it is something that I would recommend all Americans watching, if only to better understand exactly how the current polarization specifically came to materialize.

Yet, this is one of actually many programs that have been warning about the marked change in direction that the country has taken under Donald Trump. His political rise has been virtually impossible to ignore. If you live in this country, you would have to have been living in a cave not to notice just how different the country is now with him. It is a departure from conventional political norms right from the moment when Trump descended from the escalator at Trump Tower back in 2015 to announce that he was running for president. Very recently, Trump made yet another video, where once again he is descending – this time from the sky, where the symbolism of Heaven is pretty clear – onto the White House lawn, and then we watch the helicopter rise to the sky again, and we see him on an illuminated balcony during the dusk as he takes his mask off. That one reminded me, frankly, of the imagery of Hitler flying above Nuremberg, with the symbolism of him descending from the skies (from Heaven, if you will) to come down and save Germany singlehandedly.

A couple of years ago, Michael Moore also came out with an anti-Trump movie, which was a follow-up of sorts to Fahrenheit 911. This one was called Fahrenheit 11/9, and it also was revealing and alarming, with some clips that I was still surprised that Moore managed to get. Indeed, there have been plenty of movies and programs reviewing Trump and his presidency, and what this means for the country, and what kind of threat this might pose to it, and to our democratic traditions in particular.

So, it cannot be surprising that there is another one out that has made some big waves lately. I already have mentioned the name of the film in the title, but I had not yet seen it. Finally, I recently decided to go ahead and part with the $4.99 to watch the movie, which was highly recommended and which I had not heard anything bad about. It featured psychologists unapologetically examining Trump’s behavior, and outright making comparisons with some of the worst tyrants in modern history particularly the examples of Benito Mussolini and, of course, Adolf Hitler. Comparisons between Trump and Hitler, in particular, have always made me a bit uncomfortable, because it is such an extreme example. After all, such comparisons are often far too lightly made. Remember when everyone was comparing Saddam Hussein to Hitler, with a former president even suggesting that he was the next Hitler? Saddam might have been bad, but he never had anywhere near the kind of power or posed the kind of serious and immediate threat to the entire world that Hitler did. After all, Hitler’s Germany never was defeated in war within weeks, or had a No Fly Zone imposed on it.

Trump is not normal. There is, in fact, nothing normal about this MAGAlomaniac. Nothing normal about his frankly now legendary levels of narcissism, or his clearly anti-democratic leanings, or his transparent lust for power and his obvious willingness to push democratic traditions aside in order to entrench his own power. There is nothing normal about an elected leader of what still remains, for the time being, the world's leading superpower, ranting against detractors with mean-spirited tweets anytime someone displeases him, sometimes at three in the morning.

One aspect to Trump's rise that feels like it makes sense is that he was effectively a protest vote, in some respects, to the well-oiled machinery that was American politics prior to the 2016 election. That he was effectively a monkey wrench thrown into that machinery, and his rise to the Oval Office marked a clear departure from everything that came before. But one of the people in this movie sums up my own feelings about this. George Conway, the husband of Kelly Ann Conway, a prominent figure in the 2016 Trump campaign and the Trump administration, says in the movie:

"Donald Trump is like a practical joke that got out of hand."

That feels like the gospel truth. And it is this spirit, or perhaps illusion, of he and his campaign being some kind of harmless practical joke that makes him so dangerous, and a threat to democracy itself. Witness the recent incident where some rabid Trump supporters in Texas, donning pro-Trump flags, went out to a highway and tried to run a Biden campaign bus off the road. It seems like something Trump fans would enjoy, get a laugh out of. Almost like a practical joke. The tragedy of it is that this practical joke has become the normal, and this new normal has now become the most serious threat to American democracy and our very liberty and freedom that we as a nation have ever seen.

This movie should be seen by everyone before the election. That is why I feel it is such a shame that the film makers insisted on making sure everyone paid to see it. It is an important statement about just how "Unfit" Trump really is, and they should have somehow found a way to out profits aside in time to allow people to see it and get some exposure as to just how unfit Trump really is, because ultimately, American democracy should not be tripped up by some jokers with a warped sense of humor. The stakes are just too high.

Trump Declines Any Commitment to Peaceful Transition of Power If He Loses This Election

This was a post that should have been published a while ago. Yet, with some of the problems that I have been experiencing with the blog in these past few weeks, it kind of got lost in the shuffle. It seemed worth publishing now, however, because it is not irrelevant. In fact, with the election just one day away, and with the recent incident when a bunch of Trump fans in Texas took it upon themselves to drive out on a highway and physically slow down a Biden campaign bus, it seems more relevant than ever. There may have been plenty of things that I have not appreciated about past major presidential candidates, largely based on ideological differences. However, I have never seen the frankly anti-democratic spirit, words, and actions that dominate the re-election campaign of King Con Don and his legion of mindless morons.

In typical fashion, Trump did not outright order this. But he praised this very bad behavior, empowering actions that, frankly, are nothing less than a threat to American democracy itself. It feels more and more like what the country is voting on this November is the decision to either reject this kind of absurdity as an aberration, or to accept this as the new normal of what passes for American politics, which will in a very real sense, be the end of American democracy as we have known it. If we allow this man to get away with all of this, and if he stays in office for another four years, who knows how much more emboldened he will feel, and what new attacks on democracy he will relentlessly set about undermining?

So after seeing this post, I decided to publish it today:

Is this even really a surprise?

From the moment when he won the election in 2016, I had a sinking feeling that Trump’s ascension to the White House was bad news for democracy. Very bad news. He will never give up power, I figured. Nor was I alone. Bill Maher has been saying this very publicly for a long time as well.

Why would anyone be so suspicious that this man will not give up power, at least not easily, or possibly even peacefully?

Well, because he is an intolerant, narcissist and MAGAlomaniac, and his lust for power is legendary. He has always been like this, and there is no reason to think that he would change once he actually took office.

Nor has he changed, or grown into the office, or anything else that people claimed he might change into once in office.

And Trump has consistently said and done things to confirm the worst suspicions about him held by his detractors. Often times, he will claim that he was merely joking, like when he was “joking” about the United States perhaps having a president for life, or about how his supporters would demand that he has a third term in office years ago, even though he was not yet done with his first term, not having won a second term, and which he obtained in an election when he lost the popular vote by almost three million. It’s funny how all of his “joking” always seems to be about power, and his lust for obtaining more of it, or keeping the power that he has, huh? Some really funny “jokes, “right?

This is a terrible time in our nation's history. It is made all the worse due to the fact that tens of millions of Americans frankly foolish believe that it is such a great time in our nation's history. So many people are still captured by a certain charm that this obvious fraud, this well-established scam artist, possesses. He has a long history of manipulating people, and the saddest aspect about this chapter that our nation is currently writing is what it has revealed about friends and neighbors, and sometimes family. Trump has brought an all too visible ugliness, just apparently buried under the surface for all of these years, into the spotlight in what passes for politics today in our nation.

There are some very real reasons that Trump won, of course. He appealed to people who felt left out, or left behind, forgotten. Certainly, there was an element of race, particularly racism, that he also tapped into rather shamelessly and cynically. In that, he is both the same and different than other politicians. But not everyone who voted for him is a racist. It is not quite as clear-cut as that.

But the anti-democratic spirit that bleeds through the words and actions of not just Trump, but his supporters, is hard to ignore, or explain away somehow. It would also be dangerous to ignore, or explain away. It is clearer than ever now that what is at stake in this election is what remains of our practicing American democracy itself. That is not an overreaction, as Trump's brash refusal to commit to a peaceful transition of power should he lose this election amounts to an attack on the spirit of democracy itself. It is nothing less than an attack on the voice of the people, and their power to choose their own leaders, to say nothing of the political continuity and stability of the country itself.

Trump needs to go. We urgently need to get this incredible threat to our democracy out of office, and put his presidency into the past, into the dustbin of history. We cannot afford not to do so.

Punk Icon Expresses His Support For Donald Trump .

So here was something in the news that was damn depressing to me, as if anybody needs depressing news these days.

You know that feeling you get when you have respect for someone, perhaps even think that they are intelligent, and then find out something about them that you feel reveals them as jaw-droppingly stupid on one or more issues?

Well, that has happened a number of times with me just in the past four years, ever since the political rise of Donald Trump. To me, it is rather obvious that Trump is a man who lacks any real substance, who is a transparent narcissist who takes credit for anything and everything remotely good, and who distances himself to the point of throwing others under the bus and pointing the finger of blame at anyone else when things go bad. But one of the things that has alarmed me in the past four years is just how many people seem evidently unable to read Trump, to see him for what he really is. As I have said before, it is actually quite shocking that many Americans, particularly rural Americans who traditionally were skeptical of any rich, slick city slickers with a false sense of entitlement, would up being Trump’s strongest and frankly, most blindly loyal supporters. If there has ever been the picture of a big city elite who is not to be trusted as far as any of us could casually sling a grand piano, it is Donald Trump. Yet time and time again, we keep seeing people who seem to fall under his spell.

That has been the case in my personal life, with some people I had (mostly past tense) a decent level of respect for. That includes former friends and classmates from high school and college, as well as former coworkers and other friends. And while I usually do not care much about the political leanings of celebrities, it has been disappointing, to say the least, that some celebrities have also so publicly fallen in love with the con artist in the Oval Office. From former political opponents who now seem to bend over backwards to lick his boot, including Mitch McConnell, Lyndsey Graham, and Ted Cruz, to celebrities such as Roseanne to Kirstie Alley to 50 Cent to Dennis Quaid and some others who are not immediately springing to mind.

Recently, however, I learned of another celebrity – one who I care quite a bit more about than most of those others who were just mentioned – who voiced his support for Trump.

John Lindon, also known by his alias Johnny Rotten when he was the frontman for legendary punk band The Sex Pistols, is supporting Donald Trump in the 2020 White House race, saying that he is the “only sensible choice.” He elaborated, suggesting that Trump has been good for the economy, and trusts him to continue doing a good job with the economy.

He went on to add that Biden in “incapable” of leading the country.

Not sure if he has been paying attention to what’s been going on for the past four years. Trump has focused so much on championing (and taking credit for) strong stock market numbers, that it has come at the exclusion of other economic considerations, including more focus on the tens of millions of Americans who have been thrown to unemployment this year due to the coronavirus, or the millions more who are about to face the very real threat of eviction, as many of the laws protecting them during the pandemic are set to expire.

Plus, Trump’s absolute disdain for science, and facts more generally, is despicable. For that matter, his stressing frankly criminal censorship at any cost of scientific data that contradicts his conspiracy theory beliefs that climate change is a Chinese hoax with the express intent of weakening the American economy. Or, for that matter, that this whole coronavirus pandemic was also specifically created by the Chinese with the intention of hurting the American economy, and specifically of undermining his own presidency. Overall, the staggering number of lies and disinformation from this Trump administration has been appalling, and has added to the feeling of a lack of stability and sure footing with American democracy, and indeed even world stability, quite frankly.

Add to that the relentless attacks on traditional institutions of American democracy itself, with his relentless attacks on a free media that dares to criticize him, systematically labeling any even remotely critical stories as “fake news,” and his also systemic attempts not to unify the American people as he promised he would, but to actively and knowingly divide them, establishing himself as far and away the most polarizing political figure in modern history since at least the end of World War II, and you have someone who, on almost every level, has shown himself to be intensely and unquestioningly unfit for the office that he now holds. He has caged young children at the border after separating them from his parents. He sent his version of secret police onto the streets of American cities, where citizens were arrested by unidentified government agents and then sent away in unmarked cars to unknown destinations. And he has continually, repeatedly urged armed groups who support him to take an active and aggressive role, even recently hinting at something that would amount of voter intimidation at the voting facilities. These are inexcusable attacks on democracy itself, and something that Lydon, who once was a harsh critic of anything that smacked of fascism, should not be able to so easily overlook.

So how is that so many tens of millions of Americans fail to see all of that? How is that these ridiculous celebrities (and I am including John Lydon in this category as well) are advocating more of the same relentless attacks on democracy itself?

Lydon also apparently identifies with Trump in another regard, as well: he feels sympathy for anyone who is labeled a racist, as Trump has often been. Lydon himself was involved in an event that had many condemning him as a racist as well, when he and his entourage allegedly attacked Okereke. Most of what I read about this incident seems more or less hearsay, so I will not comment further on that.

However, I will elaborate a bit on my own disappointment in John Lydon, supposedly a punk in spirit, for his frankly shameful and likely mindless support of a tyrant like Trump. I used to have quite a bit of respect for Lydon, and figured that he had a unique perspective on things, on life and politics and all sorts of other things. But after hearing his absurd rationale for supporting a monstrous jackass and obvious threat to democracy like Trump, I just lost a lot of respect – a hell of a lot of respect – for Lydon.

Maybe he should go back and remember what got him to pen the lyrics for the most famous song by the Sex Pistols: God Save the Queen. I actually like that song, and not much caring for the idea of a Royal Family, felt that it was a song that made a strong statement for the British people to get over their daydreams of retaining the traditional Empire, and to embrace a more promising, modern future. In that song, he blasted the British fixation on the Royal Family, suggesting that it was a fascist regime and made people into morons. The lyrics go on:

There is no future

And England’s dreaming

Yes, and I suspect that Johnny’s own dreams have turned a bit rotten, as well, if he’s trying now to justify his unjustifiable support of a monster like Trump, who is infinitely worse than any member of the Royal Family that I know of.

Shame on Johnny Rotten. He once epitomized punk rebelliousness and free-thinking approach. Now, he supports the ultimate elitist, Donald Trump, who often violently attacks anyone who dares to think differently than he does. At the end of the day, just another mindless cog in the machinery, after all. Some punk he turned out to be.

What a disappointment

In Yet Another Sign of America's Deteriorating Democracy: Biden Team Cancels Event After Highway Harassment By MAGA Group

If democracy is supposed to rely on any one thing, it is the integrity of elections.

But Trump fans are no huge fans of democracy. Some of them have even taken to saying that the United States is a republic, not a democracy. As if the democracy that our Founding Fathers set up - flawed as it has traditionally been - was just static, or some minor detail. As it democracy is not the voice of the people of the country itself by design.

That democracy has been expanding ever since it's conception. Again, it had flaws. When it began, it was restricted to wealthy, white male landowners. Slowly, it was expanded to include other races, and women, and other disenfranchised people. Eventually, it grew scary for those who felt that it was including too many people, and we are seeing a backlash against it.

Make no mistake: this backlash is anti-democratic in nature.

When anti-Trump factions point out how democracy has been eroding under Trump, this is the kind of thing that they mean. It is not just Trump himself who has attacked democratic institutions, but his enablers. That means his fellow Republicans in Congress, in particular, but it also means his loyal followers, who want to try and intimidate everyone else by a show of force.

That is why this election is so important, even crucial. It feels quite literally as if democracy itself is at stake. If Trump wins, if this nation has to endure another four years of relentless attacks against traditional democratic institutions, our democracy itself - what is left of it, anyway - will likely be so drastically undermined, as to no longer truly qualify as a democracy anymore.

It really is no stretch, then, to imply that this election is about the future of our democracy itself.

Vote!
