The Statue of 14 Time French Open Champion Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros
Indeed, Rafael Nadal turned 40 years old today.
It seems fitting, since the French Open is still going on even as I write this, although it certainly appears to be winding down. Seeing all of these very high seeds fall out of the tournament, often with shock upsets, one after the other, really makes you appreciate the consistency of Nadal's greatness. He won 14 French Opens in a span of 18 years.
My suspicion is that we will not see that level of dominance from any tennis player, man or woman, on any surface, anytime soon.
And Nadal seems like a very decent, likeable guy off the court. He hardly seems like he takes himself overly seriously, or that he allowed all of that success to get to his head.
Anyway, Happy 40th Birthday to Rafael Nadal.
