On this day in 1712, highly influential Enlightenment thinker and writer Jean-Jacques Rousseau was born in Geneva, Switzerland.

Rousseau was a philosopher, composer, writer, and botanist. His life and legacy has generated controversy in modernity. However, he writings and philosophy has been undeniably influential both in his time, as well as more modern times, regarding political, educational, and economic beliefs. Among Rousseau's most influential works are The Social Contract (1762), Emile (1762), and Discourse on the Origin of Inequality (1755). His writings even proved to have a strong influence on the French Revolution, as well as colonial thinking more generally.

Rousseau died on July 2, 1778 at 66 years old.
