We all know that time tends to feel like it gets faster the older we get.
For me, it really started happening - at least when I really noticed it happening - late in the winter or early spring of 1990. I was a sophomore in high school, and did not have much in the way of a social life, or anything. And there was this girl in one of my classes who I had a crush on. Granted, she had a boyfriend, a guy who I had gone to elementary school with and who always struck me as kind of a dick. But this girl and I would exchange notes and all of the usual things that teenagers did back then, which I assume has gone away in this age of texts and social media and such. At the time, however, that was what we did.
Anyway, I was staying at my grandparent's place (actually, my grandmother's by that point, as my grandfather had died the year before) during spring break. And I noticed, all of a sudden, that the year seemed to have gone by really quickly. It was March, I believe, and I did a quick calculation in my head of how much time was left in the school year.
Now normally, at least up to that point, the months leading up to summer break felt impossibly long. Like most kids, I loved the summer break and could not wait for the school year to end. But this year, I did not want the academic year to end. It seemed to me that once it ended, so too would this...whatever you might call it....with this girl would end.
That was the first time that I noticed how quickly the time had passed since the Christmas break. For the first time, it felt like those months between then and the summer vacation would pass too quickly for my taste.
Sure enough, they went very quickly. Quicker than I would have thought possible, since that notion of time moving faster was still new to me.
But it has not slowed down since. In fact, it seems to speed up the older I get.
There is a short story by Stephen King about how time moves faster which I would highly recommend. It's called "My Pretty Pony." And despite the rather strange title, which always makes me feel like it's a girl's toy line from the 1980's, it is actually a really good story.
Another thing I would recommend reading is this article (see link below) in which noted scientist Neil deGrasse Tyson discusses why it feels like time moves faster the older we get. Also, what if anything we can actually do about it.
