I remember this Super Bowl well - probably far better than the prior two. The Dolphins had looked hot all season, racing off to an 11-0 start with what seemed like an unstoppable offense. Dan Marino seemed like he was emerging as the best quarterback ever, with simply an incredible year in 1984, and he helped lead the Dolphins to a dominant 14-2 mark. Yet the 49ers, only three seasons removed from their Super Bowl championship and led by a pretty solid quarterback themselves in Joe Montana, had finished their season at 15-1, the first time that any team had finished with such a strong record since the NFL had switched to a 16-game schedule for each team. Once again, San Francisco had knocked out the Giants, and then blanked Chicago in the NFC Championship Game. The Dolphins had beaten the Seahawks, and then the resurgent Steelers, who had enjoyed a Cinderella season to that point.

Miami looked hot early on, and San Francisco needed a little adjusting to slow down the Dolphins a little bit. But after a while, the defense really came on and started pressuring and hassling Marino to no end, while the 49ers offense really clicked into gear, taking it up a few notches. The 49ers wound Miami down, until they were able to hand the Dolphins a convincing loss. In so doing, San Francisco emerged as the favorite for "Team of the Decade" honors with their second title in four seasons, although most people expected Marino and the Dolphins to return to the Super Bowl sometime in the near future - something that, in reality, never materialized. I had been pulling for Miami in this one, and it seemed that most of the kids in my school had been, too. Obviously, this Super Bowl outcome was a disappointment for me, which meant that I had been pulling for the eventual loser in the big game for my first three times watching it.

Here are some of the major events that took place in 1985, the year this Super Bowl was played. The world's population was 4.85 billion people. In the Soviet Union, Premiere Chernenko died, and Mikhail Gorbachev takes his place, ushering in a new era of change, with the reform themes of Glastnost and Perestroika. Later in the year, Gorbachev and President Reagan meet in a summit, and agree to limit arms, as well as step up cultural exchanges. A couple of Shi'ite terrorists hijack an airplane with over 100 Americans on board. They were eventually freed in Beirut. PLO terrorists hijack an Italian cruise ship, which eventually causes the collapse of the Italian government over the incident. Terrorists hijacked an airplane from Athens, Greece shortly after takeoff. The Egyptian military storm the plane in Malta and free it, but 59 are killed in the process.
