Joe Montana threw 5 TDs, 3 of them to Jerry Rice.

Personal memories: I remember this Super Bowl well. The 49ers were quite dominant - probably the second most dominant team that I ever saw, just after the 1985 Chicago Bears.

Two weeks later, Nelson Mandela was freed from prison in South Africa, and apartheid officially began to be dismantled, and Mike Tyson was knocked out by James “Buster” Douglas. My family took a trip to Brooklyn within a few weeks of this Super Bowl, and I wore a Giants hat, and felt grateful for the Giants 12-4 mark that season, the second best record in the league.

Here are some of the major events that took place in 1990, the year this Super Bowl was played. The world's population was 5.276 billion people. Just days after Super Bowl XXIV was played, South African President FW DeKlerk announced that the policy of legalized racial segregation known as apartheid had failed, and he announced his intentions to lead the country to reforms. He lifted the ban on political parties and opposition groups that had long been outlawed, and announced that Nelson Mandela would be set free, ushering in what would be a long reform process in that country. Days after that, seemingly invincible "Iron" Mike Tyson, the undefeated and undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, was knocked out in the 10th round, in what was the most shocking upset in boxing history. In Potsdamer Platz in Berlin, Germany, Roger Waters held a concert performance of "The Wall" which drew one of the largest crowds ever for a concert. He had promised to perform "The Wall" only if the Berlin Wall fell, and made good on that promise in the summer following the collapse of the Berlin Wall, as East and West Germany prepared for reunification. To make things even better for Germany, West Germany defeated Argentina, 1-0, to win that nation's third World Cup title. Later that year, East Germany ceased to exist, as it joined the Federal Republic, creating one unified nation. The Communist monopoly on power officially ended in Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union. In Panama, General Manuel Noriega surrendered to American forces after previously hiding out in the Apostolic Nunciature (the unofficial embassy of the Vatican) after the American military was blasting loud music 24/7. Noriega was taken to Miami for trial. Iraq invaded Kuwait and, later in the year, annexed Kuwait. In response, the United Nations sets sanctions, and Operation Desert Shield brings hundreds of thousands of American troops to the region. Margaret Thatcher steps down as British Prime Minister, replaced by John Major. In Poland, Lech Walesa, the face of opposition to Communist rule, wins the presidential elections.
