Personal Memories: I went with my girlfriend at the time to a party at a mutual friend's place. They were from Pittsburgh and, thus, HUGE Steelers fans. However, there was one Cowboys fan, and he sarcastically asked the host if he had some board games for the second half, clearly implying that the Cowboys were going to blow out the Steelers, although that is not what actually happened. Pittsburgh fell behind early and were being seriously outplayed, although the Cowboys were not able to translate that into a big lead, and were only up 13-0, despite badly outplaying the Steelers.
So when Pittsburgh was finally able to get on the scoreboard with a touchdown just before halftime, they were right back in the thing, down only 13-7. Dallas began to seemingly take over again early in the third quarter, with Emmitt Smith running for a touchdown that gave the 'Boys a 20-7 lead.
But when Pittsburgh scored a field goal in the fourth quarter, and then succeeded in a trick onside kick to follow, they were suddenly in business. They had a great drive that resulted in a rushing touchdown by Bam Morris, and Pittsburgh was only down by a field goal. They stopped Dallas on the next drive and got the ball back late in the fourth, with an opportunity to steal the game.
However, Neil O'Donnell, Pittsburgh's quarterback (and the quarterback with the lowest interception rating in NFL history), threw a crucial interception to Cowboys cornerback Larry Brown. It was the second interception by Brown in that game, and O'Donnell would end up with three interceptions in the game. Brown returned this one well into Pittsburgh territory, and moments later, Smith once again ran for a touchdown that put the game out of reach for the Steelers and iced the game for Dallas.
This year was a fun year for me. As the new sports editor for The Torch (school newspaper), I was able to go to a conference in San Francisco, which was my first trip to the West Coast. It was beautiful and memorable, and I am grateful for that to this day! Took a lot of trips in 1996, actually. Later in the year, my friend and I drove out to Chicago, and took a side trip to Milwaukee. In the fall, took a couple of trips to Quebec province. It was just a great year on many levels, and I recall it fondly, much like the prior three years or so. And it was a great year in sports! There was the 1996 Olympics (I was especially pleased that Agassi won the gold), the Chicago Bulls had the most dominating year in NBA history, and as a fan of the Super Bowl, seeing the Dallas Cowboys and the Pittsburgh Steelers play in the Arizona sun on January was pretty awesome!
Here are some of the major events that took place in 1996, the year this Super Bowl was played. The world's population was 5.76 billion people. Chechens captured 2,000 Russians, a Chechnyan peace treaty was signed. France agreed to end nuclear testing. Britain was alarmed by an outbreak of "mad cow" disease. The United Nations tribunal charges war crimes by Bosnian Muslims and Croats. Nations pledge $1.23 billion in aid to rebuild Bosnia. South Africa got a new constitution. Israel elected Benjamin Netanyahu as prime minister. Iraqis strike at Kurdish enclave; after warning, United States attacked Iraq's southern air defenses. Militant Taliban leaders seize Afghan capital of Kabul. Ethnic violence broke out in Zairian refugee camps; Clinton approves plan for United Nations-backed relief mission for 1.2 million Hutu refugees starving in eastern Zaire. Hundreds of thousands return to Rwanda following mass genocide of the previous year.
