I was born for this Super Bowl, although still a  young child and so too young to remember any of it. Plus, I was not yet a fan of football for this one. But this was the last of the Super Bowl wins for those legendary Steelers of the 1970's, and as a fan of the NFL, I regretted not having seen them as a championship team. The Steelers secured their place in history by winning this fourth and final Super Bowl championship in a six year span, overcoming a very tough and determined Los Angeles Rams team with a comeback in the final quarter.

So here are some of the major events that took place in 1980, the year this Super Bowl was played. The world's population was 4.453 billion people. The United States broke diplomatic relations with Iran, while six Americans escaped the possibility of being taken hostage in Tehran, Iran. In a sign of escalating tensions, eight American servicemen are killed in what would have been a rescue attempt of the hostages in Iran. Iraq invaded Iran, in a war that would last the better part of a decade. Former Nicaraguan leader Anastasio Somoza Debayle, as well as two aides, assassinated in Paraguayan capital of Asunción. Three American nuns and a lay worker in El Salvador.Late in the year, John Lennon was shot and killed by Mark David Chapman, just hours after signing a record for the man who would murder him.

And here is what the field would have looked like had the losers of the Conference Championship Games, the Houston Oilers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, won and met here instead:
