Personal Memories: Not too many memories of where I was or what I was doing for this particular Super Bowl, for whatever the reason. Yet, I do remember the game.
Much like seeing the Cowboys and Steelers in the Super Bowl the year before, seeing the Packers back in the Super Bowl made it feel like this was a throwback of sorts, so I was pulling for them, although I liked the Patriots.
The heavily favored Green Bay Packers looked like they were taking control of the game early. Favre hit Andre Rison deep for an early touchdown. Then, the Packers were able to get an interception, and tacked on a field goal for a 10-0 lead.
However, Bill Parcells has always been resourceful, especially in the biggest games that he coached. And his Patriots fought back, taking away momentum from the Packers and even looking capable of blowing Green Bay out for a while there, as they scored two touchdowns for a 14-10 lead as the first quarter - the highest scoring first quarter in Super Bowl history - came to an end.
It did not take long into the second quarter for Green Bay to assume control again, however, and they finished the second quarter hot. First, Favre hit Antonio Freeman in the first minute of the second quarter to put Green Bay back up. The Pack got a field goal on the next possession, and after another New England turnover, Green bay enjoyed a 74-yard drive that took nearly six minutes off the clock and culminated in Favre diving for a touchdown that gave the Packers a 27-14 lead for halftime.
New England got back into it late in the third, with a Curtis Martin touchdown. But on the ensuing kickoff, Dwight Howard, who would be named the game's MVP, broke free and scored on a Super Bowl record 99-yard kickoff return, and Green Bay was successful on the two-point conversion attempt. That made the score 35-21, and that would prove to be the final score.
Here are some of the major events that took place in 1997, the year this Super Bowl was played. The world's population was 5.84 billion people. Mother Theresa died. Hebron agreement was signed, and Israel had to give up large part of West Bank city of Hebron. Israeli government approves establishment of Jewish settlement in East Jerusalem, which is widely regarded as a setback in Middle East peace process. The United States, United Kingdom, and France agree to freeze Nazis' gold loot. Hong Kong returns to Chinese rule. The Khmer Rouge hold trial of longtime leader Pol Pot. Swiss planned first payment to Holocaust victims. European Union planned to admit six nations.

This is what the field would have looked like had the two expansion teams made it to the Super Bowl instead.
