Since I starting watching the NFL in 1981, there has never been any team quite as dominant as these 1985 Chicago Bears were. Frankly, I actually believe that they were the most dominant single season team of any sport that I can think of, and that is saying something. I mean, it was unthinkable to have such swagger that you make a music video about how good you are, but this team did it! They truly lived up to their nickname as "Monsters of the Midway." This team had the most intimidating defense, and one of the most explosive offenses, to boot. They raced out to a 12-0 start, and looked like they had a real chance at an undefeated season. They lost a Monday Night Football game at Miami, although they dominated the rest of the way, getting better as the season went along. In the playoffs, they shut out my Giants, 21-0, then followed that up by blanking the Los Angeles Rams 24-0 in the NFC Championship Game. In the Super Bowl, they humiliated the upstart New England Patriots, winding up blowing them out by a record margin at the time, 46-10. It still remains the second most lopsided Super Bowl in history to date.
The strange thing is, as a football fan, and particularly as a fan of the Giants, I hated the Chicago Bears at the time. They were so good, it was scary. And at the time, it felt like they were too good, and would rob anyone else of the opportunity to win championships for the next five years or so. So yes, at the time, I could not stand them.
It was only a few years later, after the 49ers were crowned "Team of the Decade" (and they beat Chicago handily in two of the four NFC Championship Games that qualified them for half of their Super Bowls in the 1980's) that I truly began to appreciate that 1985 Chicago Bears team for just how good they were and, yes, how entertaining, at that. They added serious depth and more than a little color to the league, with their goofy but entertaining music video that seemed arrogant at the time, although they back it up with incredibly solid play on the field. And they had personalities galore. What a remarkable and memorable team that was! And I still say they were the standard bearers not only for the NFL, but in all sports. After all, they were probably more dominant than any other sports team was in a single season, but they were far more entertaining than almost any other team was, to boot!
Here are some of the major events that took place in 1986, the year this Super Bowl was played. The world's population was 4.932 billion people. This was the year of Chernobul, which was the biggest nuclear disaster ever to this point, and would remain so until Fukushima in 2011. Spain and Portugal joined the European Economic Community. President Reagan freezes Libyan assets and, later in the year, American planes attack Libyan targets. President Ferdinand Marcos flees Philippines after ruling for two decades, and is succeeded by newly elected Corazon Aquino. Jean-Claud Duvalier flees Haiti, goes to France. Argentina won the World Cup, beating Germany 3-2.
