Sadly, this weekend marked the end of an era in one important way: it was the first time in half a century that none of the major networks aired Saturday morning cartoons.
There are a number of reasons that factored in for this, and you can read more about them in detail by clicking on the link below and reading the article by Mike Krumboltz of Yahoo TV.
But the bottom line is that these wonderful cartoons that used to dominate on Saturday mornings, and thus served as a delicious reminder of the freedom and general joy that came with waking up on the most pleasant day of the week, are now just a memory.
It's sad, because my son, for one, will never know the joy of looking forward to, and watching, cartoons that were far more available on Saturday mornings than any other time of the week. Of course, he has access to cable, so he likely won't notice anything. He can pretty much watch cartoons, or shows that he likes, any time of day.
Still, there was something about not having cable (not all of us did back when I was growing up), and being able to look forward to all of those cartoons on a Saturday morning. There were so many to choose from, it seemed, that it sometimes felt a bit overwhelming. You would check the TV Guide (remember that?) or the free television guides that came with the Sunday papers, and check which cartoons looked the most interesting. Mostly, it was just great to see some hours of television programming dedicated specifically to kids, rather than the programming that usually dominated, almost always geared towards adults.
Times change, and some thing inevitably change. But Saturday morning cartoons seemed to be one of the sweetest and most innocent of pleasures that kids could indulge in, and now, it seems a bit symbolic, and sad, that they are gone.
It just seemed something that should be mentioned here.
