Who else is very excited about the prospect of a "new" Pink Floyd album?
Yes, yes, I know. Everyone keeps mentioning that Roger Waters, the former lead singer and major contributor behind some of Floyd's most iconic music, will not be on the album. But I am one of those strange souls that evidently liked the two albums that Floyd did sans Roger Waters.
Now, I'm not saying I like it as much as some of the bands earlier works with Waters, but I do think that they produced quality music, with thought-provoking lyrics in their last two albums. The imagery at some of the concerts was phenomenal! And both of those last two albums were without Roger Waters present, even if people are reacting to this like it's shocking news that just broke out.
Folks, Roger Waters and Pink Floyd parted ways back in the first half of the eighties, remember?
News Flash: The Beatles Broke Up!
Obviously, I'm exaggerating to make a point. I enjoy the music of Roger Waters, including the Pink Floyd stuff that he was a huge impetus and influence for, as well as his solo work. But he and Floyd have been broken up for decades now - three decades! Maybe someday they will reunite, as they did form one show back in 2007, I believe.
But is it likely? Probably not.
And remember, one of the band members died, and this album is actually, at least in part, a tribute to him.
Also, remember that, while this is an album of previously unreleased stuff, and hence, a "new" Pink Floyd album, most of it came during the time of The Division Bell, the band's last real album. It is not like they have been in the studio for weeks or months, trying to come up with completely new material, as much as they have been tinkering with older material that never saw the light of day.
There's a difference, and it is not insignificant!
You have to understand that Pink Floyd with Roger Waters may undeniably have been a great band, but they are also more a thing of the past, then a band of the present, and with a future. The fact that the members of Pink Floyd took many years to produce the two albums (there were seven long years in between those two albums) and, now, a full two decades has passed since they last put out an album of new material! That's a very long time, and it really is a shame, given the musical greatness of this band.
Yes, it is an album without Roger Waters. But it is Pink Floyd. Moreover, let's be frank here: it will likely be the last real album of new material by Pink Floyd, the last official release, and so we have this one last opportunity to enjoy new Pink Floyd music, perhaps. Whatever the hidden and previously unreleased tracks that inevitably pop up somehow with these legendary groups, this will be the last full album of "new material" from this band, even if it is mostly recycled from twenty years ago.
So, yes, I am definitely looking forward to The Endless River!
Here are some links to interesting articles about the upcoming album, including a couple of teasers that, surely, most Floyd fans have given a listen to by now. Also, towards the end, there is a track listing:
