Liz Cheney On Verge of Being Ousted From GOP Leadership Due to Criticisms of Donald Trump

The witch hunt of moderate Republicans reveals that the threat of rising totalitarianism within the Republican party has not gone away after the Trump presidency has passed into the history books. He still is very much the biggest party name and, thus, the de facto leader. Witness the current news headlines, whre Liz Cheney is in danger of losing a prominent leadership position within the GOP.

To my mind's eye, I hardly would view Cheney - or almost any member of the current Republican party - as a moderate. However, that is how people are describing her these days. And here's the thing: they are not really wrong. At least, that is, when you compare her with the absolute cult-like Donald Trump and his loyal supporters, who seem on the verge of a hostile takeover of the entire GOP. So Cheney, and Republicans like her who actually try and remain independent from Trump and his loyalists, and who dare to criticize the dear leader, look like moderates by way of comparison.

Yes, they are considered the moderates these days. This is how far this country has sunk, and continues to sink. George W. Bush is being chastised for speaking out. Mitt Romney was outright booed in a recent speech, which would not bother me too much, except that he was being booed by people who feel that he is too liberal and actually dared to – gasp! – express his criticisms of Donald Trump.

Let me say this right away (and yes, I probably have said this before here), but it feels kind of strange siding with a Republican named Cheney, who seems to be somewhat of a war hawk, much like her famous former Vice-President father, Dick Cheney. When they are now considered the moderates in the Republican party, we are entering truly scary times.

This, of course, is unacceptable to the dedicated members of Cult 45. They are not fans of any kind of criticism of dear, beloved leader. In fact, anytime that such criticism is received from pretty much anyone, no matter what the criticism, and no matter how much proof there might be that certain criticisms and/or allegations are true, they systematically dismiss these as “fake news.” In their world, only dead, beloved leader is telling them the truth about the world, and everyone else is lying, with some ulterior motives. Thus, this man, who actually has a truly extensive and well-documented history of lying, is for members of his cult following the only source of truth and light in this country, and indeed possibly in this world.

How sad. How pathetic.

And now this group, which celebrated Trump’s 2016 election win by railing against snowflakes who could not accept that Hillary Clinton had lost that election, have themselves refused to accept the even more convincing and lopsided election results of 2020 that saw their man get trounced out of the White House, having lost the Electoral College race by the same margin that he won it in 2016, and having lost the popular vote by over seven million.

Yes, they cannot accept the results of this election, even though they complained for four years about how unfairly Trump was being treated, and how much he was hated. They felt that this man, who was supposed to be an incredible, stellar source of strength, was victimized, and so they sympathized when he was whining and crying about how unfairly he was being treated. They themselves seemed to have taken the lesson, as they now are the ones whining and crying about how unfair the election had been, and how they had not really lost, but had been cheated out of the win, how this man should, according to them, still be president.

The irony is that the entire GOP seems to believe this, or is acting as if they do, in any case. This man was a historically unpopular president. At no point in his presidency did he ever crack 50 percent approval ratings. He “won” the 2016 election, even while losing the popular vote by 2.7 million. He barely won the election through a flawed Electoral College system, and acted like he had received a historically dominant mandate. He made it sound like his losing the 2020 election was inconceivable, except if the other side would cheat. Yet, he tried to push back the election because of the pandemic, which he often undermined the significance of. And then he claimed both before and after the election that the forces that be were rigging the election, assuring that he would not win, all without offering a shred of proof. Then, he challenged the legitimacy of the election time and time again, trying to stoke divisions and polarize the country even more than he already had, which was saying something. Finally, of course, we all remember what happened on January 6th of this year, when Trump was still in office, albeit a lame duck. He claimed that on this day, his supporters would take back the country, having organized a rally in Washington for them to do so. He gave a speech firing them up about how he had been cheated and how “they” were stealing the country from them, and how his supporters needed to take back the country, as he directed them to the Capitol Building, where Congress and his own Vice-President were at that moment confirming the election of Joe Biden.

This was what Liz Cheney has been warning about. She said that Trump’s cult of personality – those are her words, not mine – are a danger, and a clear threat to the country and it’s democracy. Obviously, also, it is a threat to her Republican party, and she was one of those rare members of the GOP who was trying to push back against this cult.

  1. I know you posted this story almost two weeks ago, but I just saw this article which shows that her pangs of conscience were evidently quite fleeting: https://www.yahoo.com/huffpost/liz-cheney-voter-suppression-big-election-lie-150335429.html
I really wish you'd make it possible for people to post URLs that work here by the way.
