⚽️ ⚽️ PSG Clinches French Cup Championship By Blanking Monaco in Final ⚽️ ⚽️

       ⚽️ ⚽️ Paris Saint-Germain   ⚽️  ⚽️

PSG has had an inconsistent, up and down season. At times, it looked like they might cruise to another Ligue 1 championship. At other times, it looked like they were suffering through a very disappointing season, at least by the standards that they had grown used to in recent years. Similarly, in the UEFA tournament, they looked almost like the favorites for a while, knocking off one European giant after another. Then, just as they were on the cusp of qualifying for the final for a second year in a row, they got dominated and swept by Manchester City, and were knocked out of the tournament.

If there is one saving grace, it is that they managed to win the French Cup.

The final was earlier today against Monaco, a very tough opponent. But PSG was up to the task, relying mostly on a very tough defense to ride out the win.

The Parisians did manage to get a little bit of scoring in, although it was hardly an explosive fireworks show, or anything. Still, Mauro Icardi netted the first goal of the game in the 19th minute, giving PSG the early 1-0 lead.

The defense made that stand up for the duration of the first half, and most of the second, although the Parisians clearly wanted another goal for a bit of security. This was finally provided by their biggest star, Kylian Mbappé, who managed to finally get the follow-up goal in the 81st minute, extending the lead. 2-0, PSG.

With very little time remaining, this was effectively what put the results on ice, as the defense remained stellar.

So, PSG manages to win the French Cup. It is a great achievement that kind of underscores both the tremendous potential, as well as the inconsistency, that this team has gone through. At the very least, it secures the enormously talented and experienced PSG club a championship trophy this year, despite the up and down nature of their year.

PSG is not quite done, however. They will finish up their Ligue 1 season against Brest this Sunday. Currently, they trail Lille for first place in Ligue 1, with one game remaining for each. Lille plays Angers, and if they win outright, they will be crowned champions of Ligue 1 for 2020-21. However, if they slip, PSG certainly has a chance.
