As usual, the state of the world is....well, shitty, frankly. You look at the news, and everything just looks and feels awful. The United States continues to come apart at the seams. Russia seems to be playing a dangerous game of chicken with the West, as it moved hundreds of thousands of troops right along the border with Ukraine. Climate change still seems to go virtually unchecked, and countries around the world, almost regardless of prevailing political views, seem mostly to pay lip services to it with largely symbolic action, while not getting to the root of the problem. The population of the world continues to explode, as we keep doubling previous population records at an alarming rate, even though many around the world - including many scientists - seem to downplay the dangers of more people utilizing more physical space and consuming more food and resources, which inevitably takes yet more of our ever shrinking land and precious limited, valuable resources.
And all of that is just scratching the surface. We have potentially dangerous viruses being released from the frozen ice that is rapidly melting in the arctic regions. We have more countries and people around the world with access to dangerous weapons, and seemingly with more of a willingness than ever before to use them, to boot. World War III does not seem like it is a remote possibility at the moment, whether it perhaps begins in Ukraine or Taiwan or on the Korean peninsula, or perhaps even in those standard hot spots of world tensions in the Middle East. Climate change is real, as are viruses, but a growing number of people seem intent on turning their back on science and scientists trying to warn us of real dangers.
In short, it is a mess. A depressing, hot mess, and it never does seem to get better, does it?
So we all need a break sometimes. A good laugh whenever we can get it, and almost from wherever we can get it, so long as it doesn't hurt anyone.
Every now and again, I will either check The Onion, or run into one of their headlines, and find myself laughing over the absurdity of it. Admittedly, I have not done that in a while, but mostly, that is because I likely just needed a reminder.
Well, there was one yesterday, while perusing Facebook. There was a picture of people seemingly struggling and trapped inside of an elevator that caught my eye. Then, catching the headlines to the “story” that went with this photo, it became clear what it was. Here was the headline that I saw:
The sheer absurdity of this story, with the preposterous notion that there would be studies singling out people with panic disorders being placed in the obviously uncomfortable position of being trapped underwater. Just too much!
It was enough to give me a good laugh. Hopefully, it can do the same for you. We all can use a good laugh these days, can’t we?
