PSG had a showdown with Real Madrid yesterday at the Parc des Princes.

The game was close throughout, and remained a scoreless tie throughout the contest. Both teams had opportunities, but neither actually converted. It went on and one like this, and appeared to be heading to extra time.

At least, that is, until Kylian Mbappé managed the game winner in stoppage time. Yes, Mbappé broke though in the 4th minute of stoppage time, just before regulation ended, and before extra time began.

The win by PSG allows PSG to remain in second place in Group A, with 11 points earned after six matches played. That is one point behind Manchester City, who have been ahead since early on. Both teams are well ahead of third-place RB Leipzig, with 7 points after six matches played, and Club Brugges, who is bringing up the rear in Group A with 4 points in six matches played thus far.

  1. The group stage is actually over. This was the first leg of their Round of 16 matchup, with the second leg set for Wednesday, March 9th in Madrid. This game could therefore feasibly have ended in a draw, since the winner of this 2-game series is determined following the second leg. They call it "winning on aggregate". Whoever has the most points (bearing in mind that a win is worth 3 points, while a draw is worth one) advances. The tie-breaker is away goals, so it's good that PSG didn't concede any goals yesterday. They still face an uphill battle against "Los Galácticos" (Real Madrid's nickname), but at least they've earned three crucial points, when as you accurately point out it was looking like they'd have to settle for one. Should they manage to eliminate Real Madrid in three weeks, it would be one of the most prestigious wins in club history, and would set up what would be a very interesting spring for PSG. Stay tuned!
