More than half a century ago, former legendary quarterback Joe Namath predicted that his upstart New York Jets of the AFL would stun the NFL champion Baltimore Colts, who were prohibitive favorites. Hardly anyone believed that the Jets could actually win, and most dismissed Namath as a shallow braggart. But Namath’s confidence in his team was real, and he was proven right when the Jets stunned the Colts and produced what still easily remains the biggest upset in Super Bowl history, and one of the biggest upsets in sports history. He was already a flashy athlete with a high profile heading into that biggest game o his career. After New York won that Super Bowl, however, Namath became a legend. The stories of that now legendary guarantee helped to make the Super Bowl as big as it became.
Well, Namath has been retired now for almost four and a half decades. Yet, he still apparently has a gift for accurate predictions with Super Bowls.
Yes, Namath accurately predicted the final result of this Super Bowl. Moreover, he projected that the Rams defense would prove to be the main reason why the Rams would end up winning. That sure seems quite accurate, as the Rams defense overcame some lapses – most notably late in the second and early in the third quarters – and ultimately clamped down on Joe Burrow and the Bengals offense.
It is worth noting that Namath actually played for the Los Angeles Rams right at the end of his career. He retired two seasons before those Rams would reach their first ever Super Bowl, although they ultimately lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers, who were the most successful dynasty of that era.
