One Last Link Regarding Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl Halftime Performance

Ran into this article, which also focused on Kendrick Lamar's halftime performance, which I have already discussed on two prior blog entries.

If, like me admittedly, you didn't really "get" the performance (at least the first time around), this might help you to understand it a little bit better. For my part, I will try and watch it again in the near future, this time armed with a bit more knowledge of what I am watching, and what it is supposed to represent.

The author makes some assumptions, like how the general American audience (not my specification here) found the halftime show "boring" because it was not as glitzy as some of the other halftime performances from years past. Here, specifically, is how she put it in her own words:

See, that “loud and ghetto” bit, so flawlessly delivered by “Uncle Sam” a.k.a Samuel L. Jackson was likely one of the many, many messages Kendrick intentionally wove into his performance, and which most people missed because they were “bored” by the lack of lasers, lights, smog machines, razzle dazzle, or pizzazz in his set’s staging. (I’m sure there’s a potential case study here, on “missing the forest for the trees,” a syndrome too many Americans seem to have.)

Personally, that was one of the things which I actually appreciated from the performance. All of the hoopla and grandiose extras and gestures and all of that frankly grow tiresome. But it is indeed something which too many Americans have predictably come to take for granted. And they only seem to notice it when it is conspicuous in it's absence (which most Americans seem to disapprove of).

This article seemed worth sharing here, at the very least.
