One point which I continually made prior to Trump winning the 2024 election is that once in, he would do everything in his power to stay in office from that point onward.
True, during the campaign, he flirted openly about how Vance might succeed him in 2028. I remember seeing this, too. But Trump is notorious for not telling the truth, and for saying and doing intentionally misleading things. It seemed quite clear to me that once he was actually in power, Trump would renege on this notion of Vance being his successor.
Now, it is not necessarily being framed as Trump being unwilling to leave the White House after this particular term in office is over.
At least not yet.
But this was the same guy who mused about running for a third term back during his first term. In fact, he suggested that his supporters might demand it. This is the same guy who "joked" about how the United States might want to look into the possibility of having a "president for life" the way that China has. Let's not forget that he wanted to delay the 2020 election because of the "national emergency" of the pandemic shutdown, which was the same national emergency which he himself quite consistently undermined in various ways. He also once suggested that parts of the Constitution might need to be suspended. And just weeks ago, a Republican Congressman (clearly a member of MAGA Nation) introduced legislation that would allow for Trump to run for the White House again in 2028, yet would also somehow exclude other former presidents who served two terms. Indeed, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama all would somehow be ineligible to run against Trump and make another White House run themselves.
How convenient.
I have long maintained that Trump would run for a third term in office, and possibly win it, too. Perhaps probably win it, since voting rights and access are being curtailed by MAGA Nation nowadays. Frankly, I have seen or heard nothing yet which has given me anything to pause a bit in that regard. It is my belief that Trump will win the Republican nomination yet again in 2028, and will be in another fairly close general election. This time, he will have the added benefit of his MAGA party having taken further steps to rig the rules a bit in their favor.
Didn't he even tell his followers that they would only have to vote this one last time, and that everything then would be fixed?
Call me paranoid if you want. Accuse me of being overly cynical of Trump, specifically, if you wish. But I would counter that if you do so, you might just be guilty of not paying enough attention to what this man has already clearly stated, and insinuated he would do.
Let's face it.
It's time that we start believing the things that he says, and taking them seriously and, in some cases, literally. Because he really hardly ever shows anything resembling a sense of humor. So when he "jokes" about being "president for life," you can bet that he is actually testing the waters to see how people will react.
To me, it seems pretty obvious that this would be the reason that he is hesitating on endorsing his own hand-picked Vice-President (his second Vice-President, that is, since MAGA wanted to hang the first one). Because endorsing Vance at this point would be a step towards Trump getting out of office. And that is a step which Trump's MAGAlomanical ego will simply not allow him to take.
Trump Instantly Throws JD Vance Under The Bus When Asked If Vance Is His 'Successor' by Alan Herrera, Feb 11, 2025:
During a Fox News interview, Donald Trump immediately shot down the notion that Vice President JD Vance is his "successor" to run in 2028.
