It may sound like this is a spoof headline. Something you might find in The Onio, perhaps. It certainly feels worthy of that, more than being considered serious news.
President Trump, who already expressed a desire to expand the United States by absorbing Canada, Greenland, and the Panama Canal, now is thinking that Gaza should be next.
Unfortunately, that is not a joke or a gimmick. April Fool's Day is still months away. Trump actually expressed this sentiment, and it appears that he was serious about it.
This brand of 19-century style imperialism by President Trump feels like it's growing out of control.
As part of his apparent solution for peace in the Middle East, Trump refused to rule out the possibility of deploying American troops to support rebuilding Gaza, and ‘long-term’ US ownership.
No, apparently this is not a joke. Earlier today, Trump suggested that displaced Palestinians in Gaza could be permanently resettled outside of the war-torn territory. He then proposed a takeover by the United States, who would assume “ownership” of the region. He promised to turn it into “the Riviera of the Middle East.”
Because everyone knows that the one thing that will bring instant peace and gratification for the volatile situation in the Middle East, which feels like the modern day powder keg that the Balkans used to be prior to World War I. First, remove the roughly 1.8 million Palestinians off the land, then bring Americans into the Middle East yet again. Then develop the area into a new Las Vegas on the Mediterranean Coast.
What a gimmick.
“The U.S. will take over the Gaza Strip, and we will do a job with it too,” Trump said at an evening news conference with Netanyahu by his side. The president who made his name as New York real estate developer added: “We’ll make sure that it’s done world class. It’ll be wonderful for the people — Palestinians, Palestinians mostly, we’re talking about.”
Has anyone told him that none of this is legal? Also, that it is a terrible idea? Or is this part of his supposed genius? Appearing unstable - something he does very convincingly - but which he hopes to use in order to strong arm compromises by those he perceives as evil?
Surely, that will go over well with all of the countries in the region which chant death to Israel and see the United States as the great evil power propping Israel up. Just remove the Palestinians first, then American troops come in. Because we all know that every American military venture in the region has been an enormous success, right? Then, we build up a new Las Vegas in Gaza to try and rake in more profits. Maybe Gaza could even become a new American state, along with Canada and Greenland and the Panama Canal?
What could possibly go wrong?
Trump's neo-Manifest Destiny seems to be spreading around the globe at a faster rate than his own ego, if that's possible.
Yikes.
