Not entirely sure that this explains all of the controversy surrounding abortion. However, it does feel like there is an undeniable link to the most racist elements of politics in the United States presently, and the abortion issue, where opponents often seem to take a dismissive "holier than thou" approach towards anyone who...well, pretty much anyhone who disagrees with them.
So while I cannot say with certainty that racism is what fueled the anti-abortion (or "pro-Life," if you prefer) movement in the United States, it nevertheless is something which is worth thinking about. Possibly even delving much more deeply into.
