Kansas City Chiefs
vs.
Philadelphia Eagles
New Orleans Superdome
Philadelphia Eagles 40, Kansas City Chiefs 22
Okay, so the game was a bit of a dud. The Eagles dominated early and often, to the point that it felt like one of those old school blowouts from back in the days when I first started watching Super Bowls in the eighties and nineties. The Eagles defense was all over Kansas City's offense. And the game was simply never really competitive.
So what about the other aspects of the game?
Well, they felt like a dud to me, as well.
Donald Trump became the first sitting president to attend a Super Bowl. I am obviously not a fan of Trump, and he felt like the wrong figure to be there, frankly. Taylor Swift was there, too, and at one point, her image on the jumbotron received boos. Trump does not have it in him to rise above trying to capitalize on something like that, and so he tweeted some ridiculous nonsense about her being the only one who had a tougher night than the Chiefs. Since he politicizes everything, this whole thing felt more like a gimmick and a photo op than anything more substantive.
Moving on...
The halftime show with Kendrick Lamar?
Meh...
Now when I say that, i definitely do not want to be mistaken for a MAGA Trump supporter. Apparently, they were greatly offended and outraged by the performance. I was not outraged, but felt that the performance was, frankly, forgettable. Maybe I'm getting too old for this, and it clearly was not a halftime show geared for people of my generation. Again, though, it felt like this was interpreted in a very political manner, and I saw many people who do not like Trump who acted like this was the greatest halftime show ever, and very, very meaningful.
All I know is that while I tried to remain open-minded and wanted to like some aspects of the show, I just frankly didn't. The music was annoying to me, his voice and often his mannerisms (like the apparent diss towards Drake that he evidently snuck in the performance) were also less than impressive. Sorry, but just giving my honest opinion here. There have been halftime shows with artists who I am not a big fan of, like the Jennifer Lopez and Shakira halftime show a few years back, which was fairly impressive. I was not a big fan of Bruno Mars, but felt that he put on a good show, as did Snoop Dog. But this halftime show, to me, ranks with Maroon-5 as probably the least impressive and most annoying halftime show that I can remember. I was relieved to see it end, truth be told.
The commercials also felt underwhelming, as well. I liked the Seal commercial, which was a bit funny. And some of the attempts to try and unite the country following such a divisive election year felt like noble attempts. But the commercials feel like they are losing their originality, often trying to hard to be clever or funny, and just not landing. I doubt that there will be any commercial from this year's game which will be remembered a few years from now.
Like so many Super Bowls this one had a lot of hoopla, a lot of hype. But it felt like none of it really lived up to the billing.
Let's see what happens next year.
