2016 Elections Surely Most Pathetic in American History

So finally, the last presidential debate for the 2016 election has taken place, and it is now a little less than three weeks from the day when we Americans will elect our next president. This is welcome news, given the sorry state of American politics these days. I, for one, will be glad when this is all said and done. This is true more for this particular election year than any other that I can recall, and that is saying something!

Look at the biggest headlines today pertaining, and it is hard not to avoid the inescapable notion that this really is just the most pathetic elections that we in the United States have ever seen - and that is saying something!

Hillary Clinton has been hit with yet another story involving her email scandal, which of course undermines her credentials regarding being a viable candidate. The fact that she received and sent classified emails in an insecure, private account, and that her conduct in this case has been regarded as abysmal by most everyone outside of her most faithful supporters, is something that continues to cast a shadow over her campaign.

Of course, this is just one of numerous scandals involving both of the Clintons. Her husband, former President Bill Clinton, illegally met with Attorney General Loretta Lynch on the tarmac of a Phoenix Airport over the summer, and not much later, all charges were dropped against Hillary Clinton. This made it look, at best, like a boneheaded move by the former president and, at worst, like a blatant breach of protocol and evidence that the Clintons are above the law. Since the Clintons are not known to be stupid, the latter appears to be the most likely, yet somehow, this story just got swept under the rug, nice and neat like.

But then, both of the Clintons seem to have the ability to get past scandals without being sunk. Bill Clinton was known as the "Teflon president" for all of the huge scandals that, somehow, he managed to survive (including being impeached by the House of Representatives!). There was Whitewater, there was the death of Vernon Jordan under highly unusual, some would suggest highly suspicious, circumstances. There were the countless sex scandals, and the distinct possibility (if not probability) that the president lied under oath.

With Hillary, there are numerous other scandals, including her involvement with Whitewater, the massive amount of funding she gets from "too big too fail" corporations and banks, huge sums of money as "speaking fees" and her refusal to release the transcripts of those speeches, and the whole rigged election thing, where she asked Debbie Wasserman-Schultz for help to defeat rival Bernie Sanders, and then, everything being set just so to assure that Sanders was undermined at every turn, and that Clinton was going to get the nomination come what may.

All of that, and that says nothing about some of the strange tendencies that she had at waffling on the issues. She has claimed at various times to be "the real progressive," a political moderate, and that her politics is "rooted in conservatism." Hell, she even suggested that she was once proudly a "Goldwater girl." Despite being one of the leaders and most prominent figures in the supposed opposition to Republican President George W. Bush, she went along with him on some major issues, including the Iraq invasion, the PATRIOT Act, and the bailout. She used to be in favor of massive healthcare reform along the lines of what Bernie Sanders was proposing, and what exists in other Western nations (in fact, the United States stands alone as the only country that fails to provide it's citizens with affordable, universal healthcare), yet changed her opinion at around the same time that she started receiving huge funds from the healthcare

And to think, she is widely considered the most stable of the two major candidates!

That, of course, is because her opponent is the eccentric billionare Donald Trump, who has made it a habit of almost daily saying some remarkably stupid things, and of putting forward some ideas that many believe would undermine democracy itself.

The notion that he cannot accept defeat, and that he will not bow down gracefully in defeat is seen as a threat to democracy and the peaceful transition of power. He was asked point blank during that last debate if he would accept the official results of this election, and answered by basically saying let's wait and see, outright suggesting that he would hold the country in suspense regarding his own take on the election results, and whether he will continue the longstanding tradition of a peaceful transition of power, or if he will buck this trend and, as he has, will instead suggest that this election process is rigged against him, and that "crooked Hillary" cheated and manipulated the system to ensure that she won.

Hillary has said that she is "horrified" and "appalled" by this refusal on the part of Trump to view a potential Hillary victory as legitimate. Yet, of course, Hillary and the mainstream Democratic Party now have a history of cheating, of rigging the election in their favor, so that is something that they opened up for themselves. It is still one more example of unintended consequences of actions taken, and this one is completely their fault. After all, when they showed such a willingness to at least bend, and perhaps outright break, the rules to secure an election win once, how could they be trusted not to do it again?

Still, Trump seems to be losing legitimately on his own. After all, when you say that many offensive things against women, against Latinos, against blacks, against Muslims, and even recently, border line rantings that sounded suspiciously anti-Semitic (he reiterated generally accepted arguments that are linked to anti-Semitic conspiracy theories within the last week or so), then of course you are going to send some voters running the other way. It just goes to show how much the country has changed in recent decades, given the fact that the predominately white male audience that has been most receptive to Trump's message is not nearly enough to carry this election. As of right now, Trump is not only projected to lose, but to do so in a landslide, as some traditionally staunchly Republican states, including North Carolina, Arizona, and Iowa are right now leaning Democratic. Ohio is up for grabs, although depending on what source you accept, Trump might be winning there, or it might be Clinton.

One thing seems clear: Donald Trump certainly seems to understand that his losing this election is not an unthinkable prospect. He may dismiss the whole thing as rigged, but he certainly seems to understand that there is a very strong possibility that he will not come out triumphant this November. And, of course, his fellow Republicans are worried about this, since he is the most visible face of the party right now. His unwillingness to commit to abiding by the election results seems to solidify his anti-democratic tendencies, and the fears that people have that he has dictatorial leanings and undermines America's democratic values.

Now here, I really need to admit something: I have never taken Trump seriously. Maybe that will be something that I will have to come to terms with should he win, but again, it never seemed clear to me that he actually wants to be president. Maybe the prestige of it appeals to his ego, and he likes the idea of being president. Or maybe there is just this sense that he could do it better than certain presidents - perhaps particularly Barack Obama and George W. Bush. Maybe he is truly trying to shake up the political system out of concern for the country (although this seems doubtful), and maybe he even thinks that the country actually should be run like a business (although it is clearly not a business). Or maybe this is one big advertisement for himself and whatever it is he is trying to sell, to make enormous profits from, and for which he will skip out on paying his fair share of taxes because, you know, that's the kind of patriot that he is, and it just makes good business sense.

Whatever his motivations, the fact of the matter is that he is the Republican nominee. True, I never expected him to get quite that far, although once there, he again seemed just destined to lose. Whatever else that man may or may not be, the fact of the matter is that he will never be president, no matter how much he or his supporters might want it. He is a joke, making a mockery of things wherever he goes, and there is simply nothing presidential about that. His mannerisms not only reflect conduct unbecoming from someone who wants to be taken seriously in trying to address the nation's problems, but are an outright hindrance, being a huge symptom of some of many of the problems that this country faces.

Yet to be quite frank, that is kind of how I personally feel about both of these candidates. Trump may be a joke, but Hillary will not solve the country's problems, either. In fact, she is part of the problem, being the "too big too fail" candidate that insiders in Washington and Wall Street propped up to make sure that she was going to win. Officially, she did "win" the Democratic nomination, although what her supporters will never admit to is the foul play of their party in actively supporting Hillary, and going as far as they could to discredit and attack Bernie Sanders. Yet, despite having more support from the prominent insiders, she still very nearly lost. You might think that this would wake the Democrats up, warn them that people were getting tired of business as usual. But it has become clear that this message was not received, and much like CEO's and corporate boards who would hand themselves huge bonuses before and immediately after the so-called "Great Recession," these politicians went right back to their version of business as usual, which is to say transparent self-interest, and no major or obvious concerns regarding what is best for the country.

The 2016 election seems to come down to an overgrown, petulant child, or an old face from the political aristocracy, one who feels entitled to finally get her turn at the top, and who insults the supporters of her opponents, whether she says they live in their parent's basement (perhaps because of the economic policies that she has supported in the past), or whether they are a "basket full of deplorables."

It is a horrible election season and, frankly, Election Day 2016 will be a sad, sad day for the country, whoever wins. Because it will be mediocrity, and that will assure that the country continues to lose, continues to struggle and not show it's best for at least four more years.

Indian Summer Days of October, 2016

Yes, the weather has been absolutely incredible these last few days here in the Northeast, with record hot temperatures for this time of the year.

For that matter, I have somehow managed to spend more time than usual outside, walking around, these last few days. And why lie? It has felt incredible, and what a pleasure to walk around in very light clothing, and still feel very comfortable. A couple of times within that last week or so, I have gotten a longer lunch than usual, and spent a good deal of that extra free time outside, reading and walking, and just generally enjoying the outdoors to the greatest extent possible - at least for suburban northern New Jersey, anyway!

No complaints about it on a personal level from me.

Indeed, it has felt positively summer-like, despite it being well into autumn. When you go outside, it feels like it could be August or July, not approaching late October! I mean, it is less than two weeks until November!

Of course, this is a mixed bag, because we all know that temperatures are rising. And despite how nice it might feel to be outside in shorts and a t-shirt in October, like I was earlier today, the fact of the matter is that this is not exactly normal for this time of the year. We are well above normal temperatures for this time of the year and, for that matter, we are experiencing an increasingly serious drought. It is not as serious as the one out in California, or anything, although we have not seen anywhere near the normal levels of precipitation that we have by this point in the year.

So, this feels a bit like a mixed blessing. Something that most people will enjoy when they go outside, and saying things like, "Why can't it be like this all of the time?"

Fact of the matter is that the majority of the United States has recently been experiencing warmer than normal temperatures for this time of the year, although a cool down is expected. In some parts of the west, this warmth yielded to a cold front that saw snow!

Talk about strange weather lately!

In ant case, I just wanted to mention it, as again, I have somehow been in a position to enjoy it more than usual, given my busy work schedule between two jobs. It feels like a blessing on a personal level, but it also probably should be a warning for us on a collective, societal level. I do not see any senators in Washington bringing in snowballs into the Congress to disprove the global warming/climate change "theory" right now.

Wonder why that is?

NFL Week 7 Preview

Thursday Night Football - Chicago at Green Bay - The Packers have been struggling, while the Bears have been playing much better in recent weeks. So far during the Aaron Rodgers era, the Packers have basically had their way against the Bears, particularly at Lambeau Field. Granted, Rodgers has not exactly played up to par with his normal level of play, although Green Bay has nonetheless managed to win most of their games to this point. Also, despite the greater effort and level of play that Chicago has shown as of late, they only have one win to show for it, and it is difficult (although definitely not impossible) to imagine them beating the Pack at Lambeau. I have to give Green Bay the nod in this one. My pick: Green Bay

NY Giants versus Los Angeles Rams in London, UK - The fact that this game is in the United Kingdom, and not in Los Angeles, might actually help the G-Men bring this win home. The Rams are a solid team, but are reeling, having suffered two losses in a row. The Giants, in the meantime, barely escaped the game against Baltimore with a win, but already, they need to follow that up with a win here to keep their hopes alive in a suddenly incredibly tough NFC East division. As for the Rams, they were in a first place tie with the Seahawks just two weeks ago, but after two consecutive losses, are now tied with the Cardinals for second place, and obviously, they want to keep pace before they lose what hope they once had to win the division title. The Giants offense has not overwhelmed many people just yet, even if Beckham had a hell of a game this past weekend. If the Giants offense plays efficiently, and if their defense does not show the same number of lapses that they did last week against Baltimore, then the Giants have a chance. My pick: NY Giants

New Orleans at Kansas City - The Chiefs just pulled out one of the most solid wins so far for them this season, managing a road win at division rivals Oakland. Despite some setbacks, that puts the Chiefs in a strong position, and they are especially tough to beat at their home, Arrowhead Stadium. The Saints, in the meantime, are also coming off a huge win, knocking off the Panthers. Their offense seems to have found itself in recent weeks, although KC will provide that offense a very tough test this coming weekend. New Orleans has improved since the beginning of the season, although a game in hostile Kansas City will likely be a bit too much for them. My pick: Kansas City

Buffalo at Miami - The Buffalo Bills are one of the hottest teams in the league right now. Their defense suddenly is playing with an edge, and their offense suddenly has found efficiency. They enter this game with a four game winning streak, and look like they are serious about breaking the league's longest drought for qualifying for the playoffs, which Buffalo has not done since all the way back in the 1999 season. As for the Miami Dolphins, their season was looking like a huge disappointment early on, although they turned that around for at least one game last weekend, convincingly beating the Steelers. The Dolphins have home field advantage for this one, although the Bills have rendered that obsolete during this recent winning streak.  Miami has not shown any consistency, while Buffalo looks like a team on a mission. My pick: Buffalo

Cleveland at Cincinnati - Cleveland already is on the verge of looking to rebuild for next season. They keep trying to find ways to win a game, but so far, they have not managed to seal the deal. As close as they get, they fall just short. Sooner or later, you figure that they are bound to win a game one of these Sundays, although it is doubtful that they will manage this coming weekend, as they visit Cincinnati, a team that has suffered through a disappointing season to this point, but is generally better than their 2-4 record would indicate. Cincy has the level of efficiency that usually makes them very tough to beat, particularly at home, and they should have no problems putting it all together to earn a victory this week against the Browns. My pick: Cincinnati

Indianapolis at Tennessee - Remember a couple of seasons ago, when the Colts shocked the Broncos in Denver in the divisional round of the playoffs, and earned a spot in the AFC title game? Granted, they got destroyed in New England once there, but many people figured that this team was the next emerging superpower of the AFC, if not the NFL. Well, things have changed drastically, as the Colts struggled all of last season, and wound up missing the playoffs. So far this season, they have not managed to right the ship. Tennessee, in the meantime, have started to really turn things on quite a bit, and with home field advantage, should prove to give the Colts a serious challenge, at the very least. My pick: Tennessee

Baltimore at NY Jets - This is the season for the Jets. Whatever slim chance they have for salvaging anything is down to this. Win, and they stop the bleeding, and finally at least get their second win of the season. Lose, and it's lights out. Might as well position themselves for a high draft pick, and rebuild with an eye towards next season. But the Jets need to win if they have any hopes of doing anything this season, of making something, even a respectable run. The Ravens are vulnerable, having lost three straight games, and putting themselves in a position where they absolutely need this win, as well. Losing a fourth straight could prove disastrous, and they need to keep within striking distance of the Steelers, as well as a game ahead of the Bengals - both playoff teams last season. New York is much better than their record indicates, and sooner or later, they should be able to have a solid enough game to show that there is still something of the 10-6 team that they were last season - a team that only narrowly missed the postseason. My pick: NY Jets

Oakland at Jacksonville - The Jaguars have been playing quite well these last few weeks, while Oakland, one of the surprise teams so far this year, just suffered a tremendously disappointing loss against KC. Jax has home field advantage, and the Raiders have traditionally struggled when playing on the East Coast. Still, this is a different Raiders team, and coming off a loss, the Raiders want to keep pace with Denver and ahead of Kansas City. Plus, they just have a lot of weapons, and so they might prove a bit too much for Jacksonville. My pick: Oakland

Washington at Detroit - Detroit seems to have rejuvenated what was threatening to be a lost season. Of course, Washington also knows a little something about that, having overcome an 0-2 start to post four straight wins. The Lions have beaten some quality teams, and one of the biggest factors in this game is how much they will be able to use home field to their advantage. That is the biggest thing that they have going in this match-up. Washington is very tough, and overall, I do believe that they are the better team. But Detroit is a tough place to play, at least this season, and that could prove to play a big factor. My pick: Detroit

Minnesota at Philadelphia - Following a bye week that allowed them to rest up, the Minnesota Vikings, the league's only remaining unbeaten team, return to action to take on another team that has taken some people by surprise in Philadelphia. The Eagles, too, pulled off some big wins and started off undefeated, although they have now dropped their last two games, and are in need of a win. However, the Vikings have a crushing defense, and an efficient offense that Philly will have a difficult time stopping. The Eagles have some weapons as well, but likely not enough to seriously challenge the Vikings, or to hand them their first loss of the season. My pick: Minnesota

Tampa Bay at San Francisco - A meeting between two struggling teams in the NFC. The Buccaneers have surprised on occasion this season, while the 49ers got that one really big win against the Rams to open up the season, but have since dropped five straight. Yet, despite these teams struggles,  it stands to reason that somebody has to win this one, right? The Bucs have shown signs, but with Kapernick back at the helm, and returning home to San Francisco, the 49ers should be able to take this game. My pick: San Francisco

San Diego at Atlanta - Atlanta has proven to be one of the biggest surprises so far this season, and are in a position where they can almost lock the division up with another win or two, the way that division has been going. San Diego, in the meantime, finally earned themselves a win, and only really flirted with a fourth quarter collapse, rather than committing to it, as they had several times earlier this season. The Chargers should be happy with that win, although this game is a much tougher challenge. They do not have the familiarity with their opponents this week like they did last week against Denver, and they also do not have home field advantage. The Falcons offense looks very sharp, and the way that they have been playing thus far this season, they should be able to take this one. My pick: Atlanta

New England at Pittsburgh - Here is another feature match, as the 5-1 Patriots visit the Steel City to take on 4-2 Pittsburgh. Both teams have dangerous, potentially explosive offenses. New England has put up some incredible numbers since the return of Tom Brady. For now, nobody has been able to stop them, particularly in the second half. They have not, however, played a team as good as the Steelers during that time, so this is their first huge test with Brady back. New England's defense is surely better than Pittsburgh's, although they will be seriously tested this coming week. The Steelers lost last weekend, and will want to avoid dropping a second in a row, while the Patriots have to try and stay ahead of surging Buffalo. That makes this a very good contest, with a lot at stake, and most likely, this will feel a bit like a playoff game, or will at least have that kind of atmosphere. My pick: Pittsburgh

(SNF) Seattle at Arizona - This is one of the better games for this coming week. Playing within the comfortable confines of home again, where they just dismantled the Jets on Monday Night Football, the Cardinals host the Seahawks. Seattle is coming off a huge victory in a showdown against Atlanta, and had to get a very late field goal to secure the win there. Now, they go on the road to take on their division rivals, the Cardinals. Arizona seems to have recovered nice and quickly from that miserable and surprising 1-3 start, and with two straight wins, are 3-3 and right back in this thing. If they manage to knock off the Seahawks, they will be only one game out of first, and will have collected a solid divisional win, to boot. Seattle, meanwhile, have played very well, having compiled a strong 5-1 mark. This game could essentially allow them to lock up the division before mid-season, which would have seemed a very unlikely scenario before this season started. Still, the Cardinals have shown that they still have some fight in them, and are in a must-win situation. Look for the Cardinals to contain, if not exactly shut down, Seattle's offense. In the meantime, the Seahawks defense will be tested, and it will be a very physical contest between two tough and determined teams. Somebody has to win, right? My pick: Arizona

(MNF) Houston at Denver - Two division leaders (at least entering this week) square off. The Texans are coming off what is probably their biggest win so far this season, while the Broncos are reeling following two straight defeats. Still, the Broncos are at home, and home field advantage has to count for something. Also, the Texans may be in good position to take the AFC South again this season, but that is a weak division, and Houston has not really shown much of a capacity to be able to beat the better teams in the league. That makes it hard to believe that they can actually come into the thin altitude of Mile High and find some way to win. My pick: Denver

NFL 2016-17 Week 6 Review

What a week of upsets and big wins for numerous teams throughout the league. Yes, right off the bat, starting with the big upset on Thursday night by the San Diego Chargers, who managed to upend the first place Denver Broncos, and then culminating with several upsets this past Sunday.

Let us take a look at some of these fantastic games and results:

(Thursday Night) San Diego 21, Denver 13 - It could be said that this game was not as close as the score would indicate, because really, the Chargers dominated most of the contest. They had built a 21-3 lead into the fourth quarter, and everything was going their way. But remember, the Chargers had also made an art form of dropping game in the final quarter in almost unspeakable ways, finding new and interesting ways to grab defeat from the jaws of victory. Indeed, when the Broncos started to come back a bit, it was all too easy to imagine still another San Diego fourth quarter collapse. And then, quite suddenly and unexpectedly, the Chargers defense held, and preserved the unexpected win against the first place, defending champion Broncos, who have now themselves dropped two straight after an impressive 4-0 start. Philip Rivers looked very happy to finally be able to win again and get that monkey off of his back, although it is still a question whether or not San Diego will be able to overcome the horrendous start. They still are only 2-4 on the year, after all. Still, all in all, a solid and much needed, overdue win for a struggling franchise, and this could only help.

NY Giants 27, Baltimore 23 - It started off as a low-scoring affair, with the Ravens essentially dominating early on, getting a 10-0 lead, and quieting the often raucous Meadowlands crowd. However, the Giants scored a touchdown to close the margin to 10-7 by halftime, and it became a real game. It was a back and forth contest, with the G-Men assuming control for a while, only to see the Ravens take over. The Ravens kicked a field goal to make it a one-point game at 17-16, but the Giants responded with a field goal of their own. Then, deep in the fourth quarter, the Ravens rode the momentum of a controversial interference call to complete a touchdown drive that put them in the lead just before the two minute warning. However, Eli Manning found Odell Beckham Jr., who caught the ball midfield, and the outraced several defenders for what proved to be the winning touchdown. Still, the Ravens were able to make it very interesting and suspenseful, as their drive kept stalling, but would seemingly always be resuscitated by mistakes and silly penalties committed by New York defenders. Baltimore was approaching scoring position and, indeed, if they had more time, they very well may have come up with the goods and earned themselves a big road victory. Instead, time ran out, allowing New York to preserve the victory, ending their three-game losing streak. For Baltimore, this was their third straight loss following a promising 3-0 start to the season.

Miami 30, Pittsburgh 15 - One of the upsets that surprised numerous people, as the struggling Dolphins suddenly found life and contained the normally explosive Pittsburgh offense. Normally, it is Miami that seems to struggle to find the points, and the Steelers who prove too much for opponents, but this game was a role reversal for both teams. The Dolphins took an early lead with two field goals, but Pittsburgh was able to get a touchdown to take the lead. However, Miami kept it together, and were able to retake the lead with a field goal, and then kept Pittsburgh's dangerous offense in check while slowly but surely building their lead. Before you knew it, the Dolphins had built a 23-7 lead, but the Steelers came back with a touchdown of their own to make this contest interesting late in the game. In the end, however, Miami was not to be denied, as the suddenly prolific offense managed to score yet again to put the game out of reach, securing only their second win of the season, and assuring the Steelers of only their second loss on the year.

New England 35, Cincinnati 17 - Yes, Brady is back, and so are the Patriots. Back at full strength, as evidenced now by victories in two consecutive weeks against the two struggling franchises from Ohio. The Bengals are quite a bit better than the Browns, but even they were no match for New England on this day, basically getting overwhelmed, unable to really slow the Patriots offense down, and unable to keep up with their own offense. For a while, Cincy did their job, and was holding their own. They played the first half extremely well, and were even leading into the second half, flirting with a huge upset. But then, reality set in, as Brady and Gronk and the rest of New England got in gear and, for all intents and purposes, blew the Bengals away once and for all. The Patriots are looking close to invincible, particularly since Brady's return, as they once again, rather predictably, own the AFC's best record. However, they now have a serious challenge within their own division, as the red hot Buffalo Bills are also poised to make a serious run to the playoffs, and possibly even to win the AFC East, having already knocked off the Pats in New England.

Tennessee 28, Cleveland 26 - This may have looked like an uninteresting game between two relative lightweights of the league, but remember, the last time that these two teams met in Tennessee like this, the Browns pulled off a shocking, come from behind victory which proved to be the greatest margin that any road team ever overcame to win a game. Indeed, after falling behind big here, Cleveland was pressing again, and made a serious run at repeating that particular chapter in history. However, the Titans tightened up when they had to, and managed to secure the win. It was not easy, and maybe part of the luster is taken away, considering that their opponents remain the only winless team in the NFL right now. Still, a win is a win, and the Titans are suddenly 3-3, and looking quite solid, compared to where many expected them to be at this point. As for Cleveland, their misery continues, as they fall to 0-6, and are growing desperate to find their first win somewhere, somehow. Yet another bitter disappointment for Cleveland.

Jacksonville 17, Chicago 16 - The Bears have been playing a lot better these last few weeks than they had the first few weeks. Yet, still, they managed to fall just short. The Jaguars could not get anything going offensively, but they remained composed and patient, down 16-10 in hostile Soldier Field. The defense remained tough, and prevented Chicago from opening up a wider lead, while the offense did just enough of what they had to do to din their way to a win. It was a narrow win, and you got the feeling that Jax escaped with one here a bit. But a win is a win, and the Jaguars are now 3-3, and starting to be in the position where they wanted to be all along.

Buffalo 45, San Francisco 16 - Speaking of the Bills, here they were again, on the right side of a lopsided affair, as they hosted the struggling 49ers, who started Colin Kapernick at quarterback. Indeed, this game looked surprisingly tight early on, and remained so throughout the first half, with San Francisco looking like it was in position to possibly pull off a major upset. But in the second half, the Bills defense finally started to rattle the 49ers, while Buffalo's offense suddenly caught fire, overwhelming a shaky San Francisco defense that simply was not able to keep the Bills in check. Before long, the game had gotten out of hand, as Buffalo secured a fourth straight win, and are looking like very serious contenders. For the 49ers, a halfway decent game, at least at time, for Kapernick, but the Bills in Buffalo are going to be a tough game for anybody. San Francisco has now dropped five straight following a 28-0 victory on opening night, and are already pretty well out of playoff contention. Not so in Buffalo, where Rex Ryan's defense seems to have gotten the edge, and the offense also appears to be finding themselves, as everything is clicking right now for the Bills.

Washington 27, Philadelphia 20 - A big NFC East showdown, and both teams played tough. The Eagles had surprised many by racing out to a 3-0 start, while after dropping their first two games, Washington had caught fire, winning three straight going into this. The Eagles had lost the week before, and wanted to avoid following their great start with a losing streak, but Washington now is a tough place to play.

Detroit 31, Los Angeles 28 - A tight shootout between two fairly tough, emerging teams, although Detroit used it's home field advantage. The Motor City is starting to look more and more like a tough place for opponents to play, and that proved to be the case again on Sunday, with the Rams coming close, but ultimately, not finding the proverbial cigar. Detroit seems to be having an up an down season thus far, but after losing an enormous amount of talent just a couple of seasons ago, particularly on the defensive side of the ball, they appear to be back into serious contention once again. The Rams, also, appear to be better than they have been in recent seasons, as Jeff Fischer has the team going in the right direction, despite two losses in a row now. But this day belonged to the Lions, as they pull out a thriller against Los Angeles!

New Orleans 41, Carolina 38 - Now, here was another rather shocking result. Given how dominant the Panthers were last year, you just keep expecting them to snap out of their funk, and start getting back on a role. Or, was I the only one who had already basically penciled them in for a date on Siper Bowl Sunday? In any case, this team, far from dominating the league, is now flirting with being out of the playoff race altogether come mid-season, which was an unthinkable scenario not very long ago. They played hard, and Cam Newton showed some of the style of play that made him last year's MVP. However, in the end, despite giving up a big lead and allowing Carolina back in it, the Saints were able to nail a field goal late to secure the win, moving up to 2-4, and dropping Carolina to a shocking 1-5 mark on the year. The Panthers have already lost at least once to each of their divisional opponents, and things just seem to continue to get worse for them!

Dallas 30, Green Bay 16 - Wow! Not only was this another of the surprise results from this past weekend, but it also shows just how strong the Cowboys appear to be. Indeed, despite not having Tony Romo and DeMarco Murray, Dallas appears to be closing in on the level of play that they were at just two seasons ago, when they finished 12-4 and made it to the divisional playoff round, and almost pulled off a huge away win at Lambeau. This victory at Lambeau now signals, once and for all, that this year's 'Boys are for real, having pulled off five straight wins now. For the Packers, this loss, coupled with their struggles on offense and in closing out games so far this season, should be a source of concern. Aaron Rodgers has not been his usual, elite self, and Green Bay now needs to guard against a letdown season, which seems to be a distinct possibility. As for Dallas, they are simply looking amazing, and with a new quarterback, new running back, and new results, they are positioning themselves to be a serious contender come January.

Kansas City 26, Oakland 10 - Yet another result that surprised me, personally. The Chiefs have looked on and off again throughout the season. At some points, you can see a glimpse of the team that finished last season by winning their final ten regular season games, and then shut the Texans out in Houston. Then, they come out entirely flat, and look miserable. That seems particularly true on the road, although that was not the case at all yesterday, and the Chiefs obviously came to play in Oakland. The Raiders have been surprisingly solid and prolific on offense all season, but they sure were not yesterday, as the Chiefs pounded the Raiders into submission, dominating and earning a huge divisional road win against the first place Raiders, placing themselves just a game and a half outside of the first place tie that Denver and Oakland currently share. Big win for KC, and an obviously disappointing loss for Oakland.

Seattle 26, Atlanta 24 - This seemed like the biggest match of the week. Two red hot teams who have shown the capacity to make deep playoff runs should they stay healthy and focused went up against one another, and fought tooth and nail. Earlier this season, I would admittedly have dismissed Atlanta's chances here, and assumed this would be an easy Seahawks victory. Well, Atlanta did not get blown out. In fact, they were fighting hard, tooth and nail, and seemed to have Seattle on the ropes at times, even a narrow 24-23 lead very deep into the fourth quarter. Yet, we have grown used to Seattle finding ways to win improbably, and even though this did not quite have the euphoric, magical feel of two big wins against Green Bay in 2012 and 2014, it still was a come from behind victory against a powerful opponent. The Seahawks barely eked out the victory, and should consider themselves fortunate for having managed to win this one. As for Atlanta, their brutal stretch of games is over, and they did more than survive: they thrived. Now, they are in serious position to run away with the division, and need to capitalize on the opportunity to do so. In the NFC West, the Seahawks also have a serious leg up on everyone else, and need to close out the division with this golden opportunity.

Sunday Night Football - Houston 26, Indianapolis 23 (OT) - Wow! The Colts seemed to have this game in the bag, seemed to have dominated from early on, when the Texans suddenly rallied and came alive in the final quarter. Despite Indy's dominance throughout the majority of the contest, Houston came storming back to overcome a 23-9 deficit to force overtime. Then, once they stopped Luck and the Colts on offense, the Texans methodically put themselves into field goal position and secured the come from behind win, putting themselves in the driver's seat in the AFC South, as they appear once again to be the best team in it. As for the Colts, this is probably the most devastating of a growing pile of losses this season, as the talent level for this team seems somehow incapable of putting together the kind of season that most people believed they were capable of. It looks like it will be a second straight disappointing season for the Colts, while the Texans, despite not being particularly great, appear to be heading into position to take this division once again.

Monday Night Football - Arizona 28, NY Jets 3 - Okay, it's pretty safe to say it now: The Jets are in serious trouble. They lost again, and even though this was obviously a tough game at Arizona, they just did not handle themselves too well. It showed during some surprising times, like when they were trying to get some points to close the 14-3 margin that they were down by just before the half, and did not appear to be in a big rush following an incomplete pass that, at first, seemed like it might have been a fumble that they recovered. True, in the end, the call was in favor of the Jets, as it was indeed ruled a forward, and thus incomplete, pass, and the clock was stopped. Yet, it was not absolutely certain that the call would go their way, and the Jets were wasting a lot of time after that playing, killing precious seconds, and I just did not like the overly relaxed way that they approached that. Their should have been some serious urgency to close the margin and try and get back in the game, but that urgency was not there. Not all that surprisingly, the Jets never did get back in the game, as the Cardinals basically, predictably steamrolled New York, earning their second straight win and getting back to an even keel following a surprisingly bad start to the season. As for the Jets, this is yet another loss in a season that basically has already spiraled out of control, and for me, the surprisingly lax approach that they took following that incomplete pass seems to suggest that the Jets have already accepted this as a lost season. New York is already in sole possession of last place, and there is little hope that they will find their way out of that, let alone make something of this season and make anything remotely like a run towards the playoffs.

Giants Stadium Replica Built By Devoted Fan

For some reason, I have been thinking a bit about some of the times that I went to the old Giants Stadium, and saw events. The very first one was a professional football game, but it was the old World League of American Football (WLAF). Not sure, but I think it was the New York/New Jersey Knights versus the Orlando Thunder.

In any case, that may have been the first, back in the late spring of 1991, but it was certainly not the last. My brother and I would go to see Metallica and Guns 'N Roses, with Faith No More as the opening act, in the summer of 1992.

Indeed, over the course of many years, I wound up seeing a lot of games and concerts at that old stadium. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have seen as many events there as I did, and it wound up being a lot of good memories, as well.

So, in thinking about it lately, I find myself missing it. It is just that I am not a particularly big fan of all of these super expensive, extremely fancy new stadiums and arenas for sports clubs throughout North America, and believe that the old stadiums served quite well within their own capacity. Still, it was replaced, although perhaps not as much in the hearts of the fans.

Here is an article about one fan who went to rather extraordinary lengths to preserve the memory of the stadium to the greatest extent that he could, by creating a very good replica of it:

Happy Sweetest Day!

Yes, this is a real holiday.

No, I had never heard of it before,  either.

On this day, people are supposed to make sweet gestures towards one another,  particularly the romantically inclined.

Obviously, it is not nearly as well known as Valentine's Day. It is only recognized in some states in the Midwest and a couple in the northeast.  Some suggest that this is a made up holiday to boost sales of sweets for candy companies.

Perhaps, although since it is not so well known,  perhaps we can stick with sweet gestures,  without the commercialization. We sure could use more days like that, where we get away from taking so many things,  and so many people, for granted.

So, Happy Sweetest Day!

Summary of the Western Trip - Part Eleven - Dallas, Texas

Thursday, August 25 - Woke up in Las Vegas, and was ready to go. Not that I was eager to leave the west, or had not enjoyed the trip. But Las Vegas is obviously the capital of decadence, and right by the hotel, there were everywhere signs of this decadence. There were hookers on street corners, and their shady pimps driving around in fancy cars, yelling at them and bossing them around, ordering them to move to this or that street corner. There were young people who were obviously destitute, asking anyone that they encountered for money. And all of this was taking place underneath the glittering skyline of the casinos. It was a bit depressing, and admittedly, felt like a bit of a letdown from the highs that we had experienced on the trip. We showered and rushed to the airport to return the car rental, and then went to the terminal, running maybe fifteen minutes late, at least in terms of being at the airport two hours before our flight was scheduled to take off. As it turned out, we need not have worried, as the takeoff had been pushed back by an hour. So, we ate a little something (not much) just prior to going through security. Then, we got on line, and when we approached, I noticed that I was missing something important: my license! Remembering that the Virgin Atlantic representative who had helped us had requested to see it, I ran over there, and indeed, he still had it. That was a load off. It was not too annoying, or anything, since he had helped us, specifically by waving the baggage fee for the next day, since the flight had been altered against my wishes (originally, we were only supposed to be in Dallas for about four hours or so, but ended up getting almost 24 hours when the airline changed our itinerary). When we went back to the security line, it was much longer, and so we lost some time. Still, not really that big of a deal, since we now had plenty of time due to the delay. We sat and waited, and I was getting anxious to leave Vegas, and get to Dallas, Texas, which felt like it was going to be a new adventure. Having never been to Texas, this was going to be something new, and I was determined to make it an extension of the trip, rather than simply viewing it as an inconvenience. In that spirit, once we landed at Dallas's Love Field (and I have never before been a part of a landing or unboarding that was so smooth), we went through the relatively small airport that did, nonetheless, hold some historical significance. It was to Love Field that President Kennedy landed after a very short flight from Fort Worth, and back to Love Field that his body was taken after the assassination. Also, this airport was the site of Lyndon B. Johnson taking the oath of office to succeed Kennedy as president. Probably, this mattered little to others (it hardly seemed to matter to my son, either), although I found it intriguing, and a small privilege to deal with this airport, rather than the more modern and monstrous Dallas-Fort Worth, which I had heard is a pain in the butt, and very big. After picking up the car rental, we headed straight for Dealey Plaza, which is, of course, the site where Kennedy was assassinated in 1963. It was much smaller than I had expected. When you see it in pictures and on television all of your life, it just seems to be somewhat larger than it feels in person. There were conspiracy theorists there, explaining their viewpoint that it could not possibly have been one lone gunman who killed Kennedy and, of course, they had further proof than merely their explanations, but it all came at a cost. You had to buy the products that they were selling in order to see their proof. We walked around Dealey Plaza and learned that this was also the site where the city of Dallas itself originated, and so we learned something on this day! Then, we went to Parkland Hospital, where Kennedy was taken immediately after being shot, and where he was officially pronounced dead. There was a display there with the portraits of both President Kennedy and President Johnson, who of course came from Texas. After that, it was getting dark, and we were tired, so we decided to head towards the hotel. I spotted a decent place, and we ate there, at Long John Silver, which coupled with an A and W, where we had some root beer floats. It was an enjoyable and filling meal, and my son really enjoyed it! Then, we checked into the hotel, and were pleasantly surprised to learn that the pool was still open, and would remain so until 10pm. My son really wanted to go, and so despite how fatigued I felt, we both went, and swam for the better part of an hour, until we unknowingly went past the 10pm closing time. We both slept well that night, to end our last full day while still on the trip.

Friday, August 26 - The last day of the trip, period. We woke up a bit later than usual, but enjoyed a very hearty breakfast. The hotel had what appeared to be an actual restaurant inside, and breakfast was complimentary. They had fresh fruit, real eggs, sausages, toast, English muffins, cereal, do-it-yourself waffles, milk, coffee, and juices. Naturally, my son's eyes were bigger than his stomach, and quite typically, he took too much. One thing that he did was the waffles, and when I saw his on his plate, it kind of made me in the mood for it, too. When I went up to make my own, I saw two different waffle makers, and one was making them in the shape of Texas, so I went for that. Predictably, my son's eyes widened, and he was jealous, and asked if he could have mine. No problem, although I made sure to take a picture of him with it (see below). We finished our breakfast (although he was taking a long time), then got ready. We barely had brought anything to the hotel, so it did not take long for us to leave after checking out. We then headed towards Fort Worth. I had wanted to visit the Sixth Floor Museum back at Dealey Plaza in Dallas, although I could already tell that time was going to be too tight to do everything, and that was likely going to have to be scrapped. My girlfriend had spent some time in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and when I asked her what there was that could appeal to a ten-year old boy, she immediately mentioned the Active Fountains in Fort Worth, as well as the longhorns, which are marched through the streets of the city. Upon doing some further research, I learned that, indeed, the longhorns took two walks everyday in the Fort Worth Stockyards, once at 11:30 and again at 4:30. Obviously, we were going to try and catch the 11:30 one, since by 4:30, we would be either at the airport awaiting boarding, or on a plane. So, we drove to Fort Worth, and went straight to the Stockyards, and watched the longhorns. The horns really were amazingly long, and seemed on each side to be the length of the width of the cars that they passed! That was surprising! My son enjoyed this quite a bit. After that, we went to the Active Fountains. My son ran straight to the fountains, although I made a quick call, just to make sure that I could drop the rental car off later than the noon time when we were slated to. As it turned out, since we had picked it up at roughly 5 pm the day before, we did not have to worry about extra charges until after that 24 hour period, and we would have to drop the car off earlier than that to make the flight! So, my worries on that front went away, and we enjoyed the fountains quite a lot. He really went kind of wild there, and later, he said that this was one of the highlights of his trip! I was glad that we went there, although we had to cut it short when a thunderstorm approached. Suddenly, there was thunder and lightning, and we were drenched in heavy rainfall. So, we went back to the car, and then went to the Kennedy Memorial outside of the former Hotel Texas (Now the Fort Worth Hilton Hotel) in General Worth Square. We parked and waited for the rain to subside. And waited. And waited. After a while, it dawned on me that it was getting a bit late, and that if I was going to take some pictures, it would apparently have to be in the rain. After all, we had this one day here, and really, only for a few more hours. So, I braved the heavy rains and menacing thunder, which sounded too close for comfort, and took pictures of, admittedly, yet another site with some Kennedy significance to it. It was strange, looking up at the building where President Kennedy spent his last night of his life, and I recalled a very good article that told of how three presidents were in the city of Dallas on that fateful morning, as a light rain fell. There was nothing light about this rain, however, and wearing my sandals as I was, had to jump over some of the big puddles to get to the memorial. Then, it was time to go. Predictably, the rain stopped maybe five minutes after I took all of those pictures, but by then, we were almost on the highway that would take us out of Fort Worth and back towards Dallas, and to Love Field. There was one more Kennedy thing that I wanted to see before we left. It had been a billboard, of all things, but it looked to be an old Kennedy for President campaign billboard. Thinking of the two walking, talking, breathing mediocrities currently running for the highest office in the land, I wished that we indeed did have a John F. Kennedy as an option to vote for. In any case, we filled up the gas tank (we had not used much gas on our trip, certainly not in comparison to the other places we had visited, and the massive miles that we had put on), and I stopped and snapped some pictures of this billboard. Then, we went to Love Field Airport. I tried to find out if there were any plaques or statues recognizing the airport's historical significance during the Kennedy Assassination, although I was not met with any success. Still, I tried to imagine what this relatively small airport might have been like back in the 1960's. Of course, we arrived relatively early, because it seemed unnecessary to take any risks, which meant that we had time to kill. So, I treated my son to the closest thing to a Texas-style meal that was available. He chose a barbecue meal, as did I, and we ate well. It was good, and then I went to the souvenir shops and looked around, not having had a chance to look at Texas souvenirs elsewhere. Before long, we went to our terminal and waited it out, before finally boarding the plane, more or less on time. That said, we ended up waiting on the tarmac because of an enormous storm front, and that was believable, having seen the heavy rains that we had seen in Fort Worth. So, it took a bit longer, although before too long, we nonetheless did get up in the air, and wound up landing at LaGuardia more or less on time. We flew over Flushing Meadows and saw the grounds where the US Open would be played in the next couple of days, as well as Citi Field, where the lights were on and a crowd assembled, presumably for a Mets game. It was one little last bit of excitement for my son to see before we landed. The trip was now over.
