Robert Plant and the Sensation SpaceShifters at Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) September 28, 2014

I've been to a lot of concerts. And as much as I enjoy going to them, there reached a point for me where there was a need to be a bit more selective about the concerts that I went to. Only those acts that really meant something special, and particularly those that I had not already seen before at any point.

Among the relatively few artists that I had completely been shut out with so far were any of the members of Led Zeppelin, one of the most legendary bands of all times, of course! I still kick myself over not having made more of a point of seeing Plant and Page together when they went on tour back in 2014.

So, when the chance arose to see Robert Plant in concert finally, I jumped on it!

I got the tickets shortly after first hearing about the tour, and thought it would be a great birthday gift idea for my brother, who is also a fan of the mighty Led Zeppelin.

Then, of course, I tried to acclimate myself with Plant's new album, and get a sense for what the show would consist of. I watched some of the available concerts online, on Youtube, and thought that I had more or less "prepared" for this concert quite well.

Still, there were some surprises, and that was really cool!

To open up with, Olivia Chaney was the opening act, and she is obviously a good musician, although even through her own admission, most of her material seems depressing. One song after another, she warned about the somber tone, but she assured us that Robert Plant would soon take the stage to cheer us all up (and she would be in the audience).

Sure enough, that is exactly what Plant did. I expected him to open with "Babe, i'm going to leave you", since the concerts that I had watched and listened to on Youtube all started like that. But he opened with No Quarter instead, which I thought was a very cool way to open the show!

It should be noted that Plant does not have quite the same vocal range anymore that he did in his younger years, but somehow, he makes it work nonetheless!

There was a good mixture of material from the Led Zep days, as well as his own solo career, as he sprinkled a good amount of each throughout the setlist, which lasted roughly an hour and a half, give or take.

Some of the highlights include "Going to California", which my brother mentioned that he felt was probably the highlight of the show.

I personally was actually kind of surprised by the omission of some of his material, such as the powerful Tin Pan Valley, a song that seemed a staple of all the shows that I had watched on Youtube, and one that I was very much looking forward to for this show.

Still, this was Robert Plant, and you're going to get a good show. Plant showed good energy and spirit throughout, as well as a rich sense of humor!

One of the surprises was the end, as he closed with Little Maggie. I think most people were expecting him and his band to end with a more signature piece. But the house lights came on after the one song encore, and it was time to go home.

All in all, though, a solid show, and I would recommend any fan of Zeppelin or Plant to try and catch one of these!

2014 NFL Season Week 4 Review

Some teams really came up big in week four, and helped to salvage their seasons from the brink.

Other teams, well....not so much.

The Packers, Colts, Ravens, 49ers, Cowboys, Chargers, Lions, and Texans all got important victories in more or less must-win games, while the Bears, Steelers, Jets, Bills, and Saints all disappointed with losses that seriously set them back in a serious way, leaving many questions unanswered.

Green Bay Packers 38, Chicago Bears 17 - I expected the Packers to win this game, but the blowout was a surprise. Aaron Rodgers and the Packers usually seem to have Chicago's number lately, these last few years, but given the strong showing the Bears have had the last two games, I thought that they would at least show up, or show more, in any case. -particularly in the fourth quarter, when it matters most. But precisely when they needed to step up, they let down, as the Packers extended a 21-7 lead in a close game entering the fourth quarter with a 17-0 run that made this game a laugher.  Aaron Rodgers completed 22 of 28 for 302 yards and 4 touchdowns, while Jay Cutler completed 22 of 34 for 256 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 2 costly interceptions in the second half of the game. The Bears won in almost every category in this game, except turnovers (2 for the Bears, and 0 for the Packers) and, of course, the most important one - the final score. This game stood out also as only the second game in NFL history not to feature a single punt.

Baltimore Ravens 38, Carolina Panthers 10 - If this had been a heavyweight fight, it would have been stopped a little beyond the midway point, probably early in the third quarter. The Panthers, who entered last weekend at 2-0 and were looking good, dropped their second straight game, and looked horrendous in so doing.  Joe Flacco is having a very strong season so far, and showed why in this game, completing 22 of 31 pass attempts for 327 yards and three touchdowns, while the unpredictable Cam Newton completed 14 of 25 passes for 197 yards and 1 touchdown. The Panthers were just overwhelmed by the Ravens on this day.

Houston Texans 23, Buffalo Bills 17 - Buffalo jumped out to a 10-0 lead early, and struggled to stay in it the rest of the way, once Houston started answering and assuming control of the contest. EJ Manuel completed 21 of 44 pass attempts for 225 yards and 2 touchdowns, as well as 2 interceptions, while the former Bills quarterback now playing on the other side of the field, Ryan Fitzpatrick, completed 25 of 37 passes for 268 yards and 1 touchdown, as well as 2 interceptions of his own. The Texans bounced back from a touch loss to the Giants last week, their only defeat so far, while the Bills dropped their second in a row.

Miami Dolphins 38, Oakland Raiders 14 (London) - The Raiders drew first blood, and they also scored last. Sounds good, but there was just one problem - in between the two touchdowns by the Raiders, the Dolphins went on a 38-0 run to make this game a laugher. Tannehill has a solid game, completing 23 of 31 passes for 278 yards and 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. Andre Holmes stood out for the Raiders with 5 receptions for 74 yards and 1 touchdown in a losing cause for Oakland.

Indianapolis Colts 41, Tennessee Titans 17 - The Colts had their second straight blowout win, and Andrew Luck enjoyed his second monster game in a row of production, completed 29 of 41 for 393 yards and 4 touchdowns, with 1 interception. The Colts pretty much every facet of the game in this one, getting their second straight easy divisional win. This was the 200th game of Reggie Wayne's career, and he made it count in a big way by eclipsing Isaac Bruce for seventh on the all-time reception list, and Henry Ellard for 10th on the all-time list for receiving yards, all while extending his record of 75 straight games with three or more catches!

Detroit Lions 24, NY Jets 17 - The Jets needed to find a way to win this contest to avoid being in sole possession of last place in the AFC East. But the Lions wanted it more, and dominated more than the score indicated. Detroit's defense, which so far has been one of the best in the league, suffocated and frustrated New York, while the Lions got it done on offense, with Stafford completing 24 of 34 for 293 yards passing and 2 touchdowns, while also getting a rushing touchdown, in a very strong performance. Geno Smith went 17 of 33 for 209 yards and 1 touchdown, as well as 1 interception. Some among the Jets faithful were calling for Michael Vick towards the end of the game, although Rex Ryan reiterated his faith in his Smith, and said that the loss was a team failure, and not specifically because of anything that Geno Smith is or is not doing.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers 27, Pittsburgh Steelers 24 - Tampa Bay stunned the Steelers, and they did it in kind of a weird way. They jumped out to an early 10-0 lead within the first five minutes of the game, then found a way to stay in it, eventually taking it in the fourth quarter. Roethlisberger completed 29 of 40 for 314 yards and 3 touchdowns. Mike Glennon completed 21 of 42 passes for 302 yards and 2 touchdowns, as well as 1 interception. But he was able to engineer that final touchdown drive with seconds left, completing the td pass to Vincent Jackson with 7 seconds left to clinch the win for the Bucs, Tampa Bay's first of the season!

San Francisco 49ers 26, Philadelphia Eagles 21 - This felt like the longest ending to a game that I have seen in a long while. I was not actually watching the game, but catching glimpses of it while enjoying dinner in the city. But the Eagles somehow not only kept the game close, but actually had a solid 21-10 lead, despite not managing to score any offensive points the entire game! That's a rare feat that has not been done in decades, although interestingly, the last team to do it was the Philadelphia Eagles! Kaepernick completed 17 of 30 for 218 yards and 2 touchdowns, with 1 interception. Foley completed 21 of 43 passes for 195 yards and 2 interceptions in a futile offensive effort by the Eagles against the stingy Niner defense.

San Diego Chargers 33, Jacksonville Jaguars 14 - Philip Rivers seems to want to distinguish himself with the MVP award this season, as his play is really standing out! In the virtual absence of a running game (the Bolts only accumulated 42 total yards on the ground), Rivers stepped up, completing 29 of 39 passes for 377 yards and 3 touchdowns. Blake Bortles completed 29 of 37 pass attempts for 253 yards, 1 touchdown, and 2 interceptions in a losing cause for Jax.

Minnesota Vikings 41, Atlanta Falcons 28 - The Vikings were up by ten at the half, but the Falcons were winning this game at the end of the third quarter. Still, the fourth belonged to Minnesota! Ryan was 25 of 41 for 298 yards and 3 touchdowns, with 2 interceptions in a losing cause for the Falcons. 19 of 30 for 317 yards, with no touchdowns and no interceptions, although the major concern for the Vikings after this one was that he was injured and limped off the field at the end.

Dallas Cowboys 38 - New Orleans Saints 17 - The Cowboys won this showdown, their third straight win of the season. They jumped out to a commanding 24-0 lead by halftime, and then held off when the Saints were trying to rally in the fourth. Romo completed 22 of 29 pass attempts for 262 yards and 3 touchdowns, a very solid performance. Drew Brees went 32 of 44 for 340 yards, with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception for the Saints.

On This Day in History - September 29 Allied Forces Pierce Hindenburg Line, the Last Line of Defense For Germans During World War I

Once again, it should be reiterated, that this does not pretend to be a very extensive history of what happened on this day (nor is it the most original - the links can be found down below). If you know something that I am missing, by all means, shoot me an email or leave a comment, and let me know!

Sep 29, 1918: Allied forces break through the Hindenburg Line

On this day in 1918, after a 56-hour-long bombardment, Allied forces breach the so-called Hindenburg Line, the last line of German defenses on the Western Front during World War I.

Built in late 1916, the Hindenburg Line—named by the British for the German commander in chief, Paul von Hindenburg; it was known to the Germans as the Siegfried Line—was a heavily fortified zone running several miles behind the active front between the north coast of France and Verdun, near the border of France and Belgium. By September 1918, the formidable system consisted of six defensive lines, forming a zone some 6,000 yards deep, ribbed with lengths of barbed wire and dotted with concrete emplacements, or firing positions. Though the entire line was heavily fortified, its southern part was most vulnerable to attack, as it included the St. Quentin Canal and was not out of sight from artillery observation by the enemy. Also, the whole system was laid out linearly, as opposed to newer constructions that had adapted to more recent developments in firepower and were built with scattered "strong points" laid out like a checkerboard to enhance the intensity of artillery fire.

The Allies would use these vulnerabilities to their advantage, concentrating all the force built up during their so-called "Hundred Days Offensive"—kicked off on August 8, 1918, with a decisive victory at Amiens, France—against the Hindenburg Line in late September. Australian, British, French and American forces participated in the attack on the line, which began with the marathon bombardment, using 1,637 guns along a 10,000-yard-long front. In the last 24 hours the British artillery fired a record 945,052 shells. After capturing the St. Quentin Canal with a creeping barrage of fire—126 shells for each 500 yards of German trench over an eight-hour period—the Allies were able to successfully breach the Hindenburg Line on September 29.

The offensive was driven ahead by Australian and U.S. troops, who attacked the heavily fortified town of Bellicourt with tank, aircraft and artillery support. After four days of battle, with heavy losses on both sides, the Germans were forced to retreat. With Kaiser Wilhelm II pressured by the military into accepting governmental reform and Germany’s ally, Bulgaria, suing for an armistice by the end of September, the Central Powers were in disarray on the battlefield as well as the home front. The Allies, meanwhile, pressed their advantage on the Western Front throughout the following month, which would, against their predictions, turn out to be the final month of World War I.

Sep 29, 1982: The Tylenol murders

On this day in 1982, a sick 12-year-old girl in Elk Grove Village, Illinois, unwittingly takes an Extra-Strength Tylenol capsule laced with cyanide poison and dies later that day. She would be one of seven people to die suddenly after taking the popular over-the-counter medication, as the so-called Tylenol murders spread fear across America. The victims, all from the Chicago area, ranged in age from 12 to 35 and included three members of the same family. Johnson & Johnson, the maker of Tylenol, launched a massive recall of its product and offered a $100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person or people responsible.

Investigators soon determined that the tainted Tylenol capsules hadn't been tampered with at the factories where they were produced. This meant that someone had taken the bottles from store shelves, laced them with poison and then returned them to grocery stores and pharmacies, where the victims later purchased the tampered bottles.

Johnson & Johnson reacted to the crisis swiftly and decisively, launching a massive public relations campaign urging the public not to use Tylenol. The company also ordered a national recall of 264,000 bottles of Tylenol and offered free replacement of the product in safer tablet form. At the time, it was unusual for companies to recall their products.

Before the "Tylenol Terrorist" struck, Tylenol was the nation's leading over-the-counter drug and Johnson & Johnson's bestselling product and some observers speculated that Tylenol would never be able to recover from the disaster. However, within months, Tylenol was back on store shelves with a new safety seal. The recall and re-launch cost Johnson & Johnson over $100 million, but in the end, Johnson & Johnson was praised for its handling of the crisis. Within a year, Tylenol's market share rebounded and its tarnished image was significantly repaired.

The Tylenol murders, which inspired copycat crimes involving other products, were never solved, although various individuals were investigated. However, a positive outcome of the crisis was that it led drug makers to develop tamper-proof packaging, which had been largely nonexistent before the Tylenol Terrorist struck.
