Having gone to not one, but two Jimmy Carter book signings this year, plus having visited briefly his state of Georgia (Savannah, specifically), I thought it would be good to honor him a couple more times this year with blog entries dedicated to him. This will be the first such blog entry.
Carter was a relatively obscure candidate early in 1976, when he ran for President.
But he reached the highest office in the land by tirelessly campaigning and getting his name out there, focusing on the early states, even though these were small states, in the hopes of building up his name early on, and gaining momentum.
It worked. He took the early lead in the Democratic race, and had built both a name and a sizable lead that, before long, became insurmountable.
As the Democratic nominee for President, he almost blew his chance at the White House with a Playboy interview in which he admitted to having had lust in his heart. Pretty tame stuff, but it almost cost him the election.
However, he obviously did win, and part of the reason - a large part - were the debates of 1976.
These were available online on Youtube, and I thought they would be worth sharing here.
