Coronavirus Update for April 8, 2020

The world now has nearly 1.5 million people infected with Covid-19 around the world according to Worldometer as of my writing this. Additionally, over 82,000 people worldwide have died, while over 300,000 have recovered from it.

The United States has far and away more cases than any other country, as there are now over 400,000 confirmed cases of it here. For the time being, the United States ranks third in terms of the number of confirmed deaths from Covid-19. Spain overtook Italy as the European country with the most confirmed Covid-19 cases, with well over 141,00 confirmed cases, although it has seen just over 14,000 deaths, which is still shy of the overall 17,000 in Italy who have died from the coronavirus. Italy also has over 135,000 confirmed cases, which is behind Spain and the United States for the most cases.

In France, over 109,000 people have confirmed cases of Covid-19, the fourth most of any nation in the world. France has seen over 10,000 deaths from it, as well, making it only the fourth country to have reached the 10,000 mark.

Some countries are only beginning to be hit hard by it. One of the most worrisome countries is India, the second biggest nation in the world in terms of population. It is a country with a lot of people, many of whom are packed into tight, densely populated places, particularly slums, where practicing social distancing is extremely difficult, if not virtually impossible. There are many people worried about when Covid-19 begins to spread in that country. For now, however, the statistics coming out of India are not that bad. At least not yet.

Many experts are praising South Korea for a model for the rest of the world to follow. They really took this thing seriously, and despite getting hit with Covid-19 roughly at the same time that the United States got hit with it, South Korea nevertheless did some things, and managed to keep their numbers significantly down as a result. They still have over 10,000 confirmed cases, but have suffered only 200 deaths, which is far lower than many other major industrialized nations.

How did they do it? Well, one of the main things was frequent testing. They also got face masks, and took the shutdown seriously.

Still, many are skeptical if their approach can work in other countries, particularly western nations in North America and Europe. To my mind's eye, however, if they are doing something that is working, and their economy is not shutting down like it is here in the United States, then we can do worse than learn from their example, right?
