Here is another post which might seem like it is an April Fool's Day prank. Certainly, it would have felt like one just months ago.
Unfortunately, the headlines concerning the Trump administration and Greenland (as well as other countries which Trump has suggested he desires to make a part of the United States are all too real. Trump has also claims that he does not care if there is backlash to any potential military takeover of Greenland by American forces.
Again, I wish this was some kind of spoof headlines for April Fool's Day.
Unfortunately, it's no joke:
On Friday, Vice-President JD Vance paid a visit to Greenland. His wife was visiting, and he claimed that he did not want her to have all the fun.
Vance went all the way to Greenland and then stayed for all of three hours.
As for Ms. Vance, she and other high-ranking government officials had plans, but those had to be scrapped. Turns out that those polls showing that the overwhelming majority of Greenlanders want nothing to do with the United States are not exaggerated. No government officials made any time to meet with any of the American officials. In fact, they called the visit "highly aggressive," which it in fact was. Ms. Vance had planned to attend a dog sled race, until it was revealed that the road leading there would be lined with anti-American protesters. But the organizers of the dog sled raced specifically asked her not to come.
Oh, and the trendiest fashion in Greenland right now? Alternative MAGA hats, but with a very different message:
Make America Go Away
Yikes.
Does anyone remember very high-ranking American government officials being clearly informed that their presence really is unwanted before?
Certainly, I cannot remember such things happening before.
At a time when foreign relations between the United States and numerous other countries is reaching historical new lows, this feels like a huge embarrassment. Donald Trump Jr. had paid the island a visit not long ago. Now Vance and his wife.
My guess is that the Trump administration might not be so quick to send anybody else to Greenland for the foreseeable future.
