Until maybe a week and change ago, it seemed like the Democrats - the official opposition party of the United States at this point in time - were largely invisible. This is the most divisive and dangerous time for American democracy in our lifetime, and that's not an exaggeration. And yet, the Democrats seemed to show every sign that not only were they not up for the fight, but that they apparently were not even prepared to put up even token resistance.
In short, they were doing everything seemingly possible to remind people that they are a part of the problem. A large part of it.
Then recently, cane Senator Cory Booker's historically long speech, explicitly to try and get the Democrats jump started in resisting Trump. It dominated headlines for a while. So did the anti-Trump rallies in cities all across the United States. Also, there was an election in Wisconsin which Elon Musk poured huge amounts of money to try winning, but which nevertheless went the other way, and resoundingly so.
Just a little bit of daylight, right?
Well to me, the first real resistance from big name Democrats came a bit before all of that. And it did not include boring old names like Schumer or Pelosi or the Clintons or Obamas or Bidens.
No, the Democrats making noise in loudly and proudly resisting the increasingly fascistic feel of Trump and his Project 2025 agenda are none other than Senator Bernie Sanders and House Representative Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez. They embarked on what has been called the "Fighting Oligarchy" tour, the purpose of which is self-explanatory, right their in the name of the tour.
A few days ago, Sanders released a video, again trying to rally Americans unhappy with what is going on to action, to actively oppose this regime and, ultimately, to defeat it. This is what feels like it's been missing from the United States for too long now. There has largely been an absence of meaningful opposition to Trump, especially if you rely on the official leadership of the Democratic party. But hearing real, strong, and meaningful opposition to Trump and the MAGA agenda has felt like a breath of fresh air.
This is the direction that we need to go in. Not Trumpism or MAGA cult like worship of Dear Leader, and also not tired old opposition by "leaders" like Chuck Schumer, who puts stock in the idea that Trump's approval numbers are still too high, and so we need to be patient and keep waiting until they are lower. Maybe they are getting lower currently, but we cannot wait. After all, there is a reason that they are getting lower, because Trump's agenda and approach has been ridiculous, and hurts most Americans. But we cannot wait in the hopes that maybe Americans will wake up and come to their senses. The message of what's really going on needs to be yelled, maybe even screamed, loudly and in all corners, and not simply wait for the political winds to shift in favor of Schumer and the mainstream Democrats.
