Just watched this video by Leeja Miller. She was talking about a few things here. One was Harvard standing up to the Trump administration, and how when one party or institution takes a strong stand against the Trump White House, others follow suit. Columbia, which had been, frankly, suspect in how they were responding, suddenly changed tactics and - pardon my crassness - but grew a pair. Apparently, they were emboldened by Harvard's stronger, bolder answer to attempts to intimidate by the Trump administration.
Also, she mentioned how the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has caught on to the Trump regime's sneaky tactics of doing things quickly and in the middle of the night, trying to deport people. Then later claiming that they can do nothing to get the person back, that their hands are tied, because the person is already in another country and out of their jurisdiction. Lawyers are getting wise to these tactics, and so they were more prepared this last time out. And the buses which were set to export certain people were turned around when a strong legal agency like the ACLU and judges with courage and a sense of morality ordered them to.
The first two months or so of this second Trump felt really stressful, especially since it seemed like so many people and institutions were caving in without a fight. But with the April 5th protests coupled with Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez doing their tour, Cory Booker making that historical speech, and now these trends where strong institutions are standing up to Trump's bullying and bluster, and he in turn backs off, are positive and even encouraging signs.
Maybe, just maybe, American democracy is not going to die with barely a whimper, as it seemed to be doing for the first two or so months of this new Trump administration.
Could Trump Declare Martial Law & Suspend Habeas Corpus?
