Keith Self, a member of the United States Representative from Texas, recently was blasted for quoting Joseph Goebbels. Goebbels, as most people will recall, was the Minister of Propaganda for Nazi Germany. So anyone quoting him in the marbled halls of Congress is going to raise eyebrows.
Here, specifically, is the quote:
"It is the absolute right of the state to supervise the formation of public opinion."
Now when I first heard about this, it was initially shocking. However, in the interest of fairness, it is important to note that he was actually trying to make a point critical of Nina Jankowicz, the CEO of the American Sunlight Project, a nonprofit which claims that its mission ss "increasing the cost of lies that undermine democracy."
What Self took exception to was Jankowitz's time leading the Disinformation Governance Board (DGB) during former President Joe Biden's administration. In other words, he was trying to use the Goebbels quote against the Democrats and particularly the Biden administration.
So it really might not be as shocking as it may seem at first glance. No, Self was not endorsing Goebbels or the Nazis. In fact, he was accusing the Democrats of acting like Nazis, for all intents and purposes.
Still, that seems kind of rich for a man in his position. He is a GOP congressman, and his focus is on the exaggerated evils of the Biden administration at a time when the disinformation and drive to dictatorship by the MAGA cult within his own party - and particularly King Con Don, who's sitting in the Oval Office - are in overdrive and pretty damn blatant. Yet somehow, these more blatant and outrageous transgressions seem to somehow consistently escape the scrutiny of so many bootlicking Republicans in Congress, which apparently includes Self.
What a ridiculous farce.
Below is a video clip, as well as the Snopes article which confirms that this is indeed true, although it has been portrayed seriously out of context by many on the left for maximum outrage. But since this story is related to disinformation more generally, it seemed important to make these clarifications, so that we can understand what the real deal is here a little better:
Rep. Keith Self quoted Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels at congressional hearing. Here's the context Self later posted on X calling a video's framing of his remarks "completely misleading." Jack Izzo Published April 4, 2025
