This headlines suggests that something which I personally felt should have happened a long, long time ago is finally happening.
Finally, finally, Trump voters are starting to be embarrassed by their support for this man. He has not really improved the economic realities in the United States, regardless of stock market numbers, which frankly do not pertain to the realities which most Americans face.
This man has been nothing short of a disaster as president. Americans have never been more divided in living memory. American democracy has never looked so fragile as it has under the Trump presidency. He puts up over the top promises of fixing everything, then quickly and conveniently forgets about them (building the wall and making Mexico pay for it, building a national healthcare system which would be affordable and cover everyone, paying off the national debt in eight years, quickly fixing the economy by lowering the price of gas and groceries, and of course, releasing the Epstein Files), invading foreign countries (Venezuela and Iran) and threatening to invade numerous others, including Greenland, Panama, Gaza, and threatening Colombia and Cuba very shortly after the Venezuelan invasion.
Not too long ago, we had allies and were a relatively respected nation prior to the political rise of Donald Trump. Now, the rest of the world views us with a mixture of distrust, contempt, and views our political leaders and their way of thinking as antiquated and pretty much a joke. And here's the thing: they are not entirely wrong. Trump wanting to militarily take over sovereign lands and pretty much annex them sounds like either from the era of colonialism or, even worse, from the era of dictators, which of course led to World War II. That's how Donald Trump is viewed the world over.
In short, we went from a superpower with some serious problems to a country increasingly viewed as a former superpower which is edging ever closer to some kind of abyss.
What's worse, we're doing it to ourselves. Nobody forced us to elect someone like Trump, or to empower a cult - let's call a spade a spade and describe MAGA for what it really is - in control of our political discourse. We have shown a decidedly unserious approach, and that is not entirely surprising. After all, most Americans seem more taken by what can only be termed as distractions than actual, meaningful things.
Collectively, we seem to feel entitled to being so frivolous and silly, collectively. How dare anyone point it out and criticize us for it!
How quickly this once mighty and very serious nation has fallen. Now, it's hard even for Americans to take our political realities seriously. That is why it seems like we get more serious and informative news from comedy shows and channels than from what passes as the "real news."
This is beyond sad. And again, it did not have to be this way. Nobody forced people to vote for Donald Trump. Yet, we collectively did, twice now. Maybe the first time could have been excused as some kind of an aberration, but that went out the window the minute he won a second term. And he won that second term after already having been tried to push back or outright cancel the 2020 election, and after he was defeated in his bid for re-election in 2020, and after having been responsible for an insurrection to keep himself in power, and after having suggested that parts of the Constitution might need to be suspended, and after having not really backed away from those fears that he would be a dictator.
Now, he has his second term. And now, as a direct result, the United States is looking more and more like a dictatorship. There are banners of Dear Leader in our nation's capital. We have an endless and exhausting propaganda machine explaining away everything, trying to justify every excess and overreach. We have a secret, masked police force which "disappears" people just like Latin American dictatorships used to do decades ago. The president ignores any rulings by courts - including the top court in the land - whenever they vote against something which he did, so that it seems clear that there are no limits on his power. We have a leader who is, once again, trying to push back or cancel, or at the very least control, the upcoming election, which seems just the latest proof that we are no longer a functioning democracy. And we have a leader who seems to embody the most vile and evil actions when away from the public eye, as his being mentioned in the Epstein Files tens of thousands of times clearly insinuates.
Indeed, we did this to ourselves. But not all of us voted for him.
Those who did have every reason to be embarrassed.
Maybe it's time to learn some lessons and take things just a little more seriously in this overly privileged country?
