⚽️ L'Equipe de France, Newly Crowned World Champions, Finally Top the FIFA/Coca-Cola Men's World Rankings ⚽️

It's official!

Finally, the new world champions, fresh off their second ever World Cup championship, have now officially jumped up to the very top of the FIFA Men's World Rankings, moving up from their previous position of seventh.

Right behind them is Belgium, the team that they defeated in a grueling semifinal contest to reach the final match. The team that they defeated in the final, Croatia, is now ranked number 4, moving up 16 spots from their previous ranking of 20th. Personally, I thought it was a bit unfair that they were not ranked at least ahead of Brazil, which looked more or less pedestrian, at least in comparison to how Brazil usually looks. They only made it to the quarterfinal round, while Croatia made it all the way to the final. What does Croatia have to do to rank higher than Brazil, anyway?

Some other notable movements include the previous number one ranked team, Germany. After an abysmal showing in the World Cup, where they uncharacteristically failed to even get out of the round robin play in the first round, they dropped all the way to the 15th ranking. I found it a bit unfair that they just edged out Mexico for that spot, even though Mexico defeated them and had a far more impressive World Cup showing than Germany did.

Russia, the host country during this summer's World Cup, jumped up 21 positions, to ne ranked number 49. Frankly, they were so impressive in completely dismantling two sides, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, in the first round, and then finding a way to hold off Spain to advance to the quarterfinal round, that I had assumed that they would be much higher in terms of the rankings.

These were just some of the strange movements in the rankings that I saw, but could not fully understand. Admittedly, I am not sure exactly how the rankings work.

Thanks to my brother for bringing this to my attention. I had been checking fairly regularly ever since France won the cup last month, but the listing always showed the old rankings that predated the results of the recent World Cup in Russia which wrapped up last month.
