Some sad news to report, as the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin has died from an advanced case of pancreatic cancer. She was 76 years old.
Sometimes, it seems a bit cliché to say that someone was the voice of a generation, or truly defined her times. In the case of Franklin, however, it fits.
She began her musical career right at the time of the civil rights movement, demanding respect - R-E-S-P-E-C-T - at a time when blacks in general were often still viewed, and treated, as second class citizens, and when many men viewed women in the same way. It was seen as an anthem of empowerment by millions.
That began a musical career which spanned more than half a century. During that time, she performed with countless musical legends, and performed at such high profile national events as the funeral for Martin Luther King, Jr., and the inauguration of President Barack Obama.
She stopped touring last year due to health concerns.
Former President Barack Obama said of Franklin:
"Aretha helped define the American experience. In her voice, we could feel our history, all of it and in every shade -- our power and our pain, our darkness and our light, our quest for redemption and our hard-won respect. May the Queen of Soul rest in eternal peace."
Former Beatles legend Paul McCartney also paid tribute to Franklin yesterday:
Paul McCartney Verified account @PaulMcCartney 18h18 hours ago More Let’s all take a moment to give thanks for the beautiful life of Aretha Franklin, the Queen of our souls, who inspired us all for many many years. She will be missed but the memory of her greatness as a musician and a fine human being will live with us forever. Love Paul
RIP, Aretha Franklin. She will be missed.
