Bosox Convincingly Knock Off Yankees to Move On to ALCS

The Boston Red Sox pulled off a huge series win just a couple of days ago, defeating their hated division rivals, the New York Yankees, in Game 4, thus clinching the best of five series, three games to one, and eliminating them from the postseason.

It was the first time that these two storied franchises had met in the postseason since their epic 2004 ALCS series, when the Red Sox came from three games to none down to pull off the greatest series comeback in baseball's postseason history, ultimately defeating the Yankees in Game 7.

One interesting fact about this postseason series: the Boston Red Sox handed the Yankees their worst single game postseason defeat in franchise history in Game 3 at Yankees Stadium, beating them by a rather stunning score of 16-1. The series had been tied at one game apiece heading into that contest, but the win gave Boston the decisive advantage for the duration of the series.

In game 4, the Red Sox took an early 3-0 lead in the third inning, then extended it to 4-0 by the fourth, before the Yanks mounted a comeback. It was still 4-1 going into the ninth, but New York predictably rallied. They loaded the bases, and scored two runs, inching their way closer, and threatening to outright win with a huge hit on what might have been the final play.

But Boston managed to hang on and got that crucial third out on a remarkable play, as Steve Pearce stretched and caught perhaps the most important ball off his life to tag from Eduardo Nunez to tag Yankee second baseman Gleyber Torres out. It was so close, that a review was instantly called, but the original call stood nevertheless.

Red Sox outfielder Andrew Benintendi had a particularly strong series, and earned a reputation as a Yankees killer, getting numerous hits against Boston's biggest foes.

What a series for the Bosox, who now go on to the ALCS to face the defending World Series champions, the Houston Astros.
