A Visit to Watkins Glen State Park

To be honest, I did not know much about Watkins Glen until fairly recently. I had seen signs for it on the highway over the years when passing by, but it was just another name for another town of seemingly no particular interest. Even as recently as last year, when I helped my parents get settled into a fairly nearby town (about one hour away, give or take), I would just pass the signs for Watkins Glen without a second thought.
Then came news of the scheduled Woodstock 50 concert, which was to take place at Watkins Glen, specifically at the international racetrack there. Suddenly, my ears perked up, being a big fan of the original Woodstock. I was not really planning to go to this concert, because it looked incredible expensive, and also, I was afraid that it would fail as miserably as Woodstock '94 and Woodstock '99 in terms of honoring the spirit of that original concert. Then, of course, the whole thing became a fiasco, with the town of Watkins Glen ultimately ending any possibility that the concert would be held there. This was in June, just weeks from when the concert was actually supposed to take place. It was moved to Maryland, but one musician after another cancelled their scheduled appearances, until the whole thing was cancelled outright.
So much for that.
But the name of the town stuck for what almost took place there. And then, when I was doing some research for some points of interest to visit during our stay here for vacation this summer, I kept seeing Watkins Glen pop up. The pictures on the internet looked impressive, and so it came to pass that his was one of the places that would be worth visiting.
On Wednesday, we finally made it to Watkins Glen, and visited the famous park there, with the spectacular canyon. It was indeed a gorgeous walk, and fascinating to think that this whole thing had not existed about 12,000 years ago.
So, naturally, I tried to take some good pictures, and it seemed like something worth sharing on this blog. Without further ado, here are the pictures below.
Enjoy!
